When You Need an Interruption

Supertrooper brought this to our attention. Fake Call lets you set a timed call from a contact of your choice so you can conveniently step out of a meeting, bad conversation, or hairy situation.

There are a few simple to use options:

•    5 minutes – perfect for cutting short people that ambush you in the hall

•    A little longer – anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or a specific time

•    Specific Time – set a time AND a date to be interrupted

•    Right Now – for those “need…to…get…away…” moments

It’s free for download from Trinket Software’s site. Enjoy!

More Pics of the Shadow II/2

From these two shots it comes off looking a lot better than the previous shots we’ve seen. It seems that T-Mobile and HTC are continuing the sleek feel of the shadow, albeit a bit more rounded this time. Some rumors project the release date to be October 15th, which is coming up real fast. With the G1 news, I’m wondering how T-Mobile is going to hype the Shadow II. Maybe it will be ‘Shadowier…’

Extended Battery for the Shadow

I know many of you have been waiting to get your hands on an extended battery for the Shadow. There is one available from BoxWave. I am almost done with testing it in comparison to the OEM battery that comes with the Shadow. Look for that post later tonight. I’m sure you will find it worth it.

In the meantime, the battery is larger and comes with an larger battery cover (pics to come soon). It is also 2200mah in comparison to the 920mah OEM battery that’s a big difference. So far I can tell you the results are great. My testing might not be 100% scientific but it is aimed squarely at what most of us do, except amplified a bit.

Stay tuned.

Black Rubberized Shadow Case

Amazon has a great deal on a Black Rubberized Case for the Shadow right now. Its usual price is $19.99 but you can get it now for $5.39. It’s good for proctecting the edges and shine of your Shadow and also gives it a slightly different look. From the pictures it looks like it might help prevent some accidental calling/answering due to the Shadow’s raised Send/End buttons. I just ordered mine and expect it in a few days.

There is also a transparent case and one with a belt clip. If you find deals like this be sure to let us know in the Ask Mike page so we can tell everyone else!

How to Adjust Sound Profiles

In Windows Mobile you can modify your sound profiles to your likings. Most phones come with several default profiles but you can edit these so they work for you. On the Shadow there are five profiles Normal, Vibrate, Silent, Outdoors, and Automatic (accessible by holding down the Home button). I decided to change my Outdoors to a Sleep profile. Here is how that was accomplished.

Insurance?

To pay or not to pay. That seems to be the question when it comes to phone insurance. There are many considerations to take into account when it comes to deciding whether or not to get insurance on your phone. Lately, I’ve received a lot of emails from people who broke their Shadows in one way or another. Be it falls, drops, water or stolen it does cost money to replace or restore your Shadow.

The solution is insurance (T-Mobile does provide it). I have used it before, many years ago for a broken screen. The Shadow does demand some dollars so unless you have cash coming out of your ears you might want to consider the replacement costs. My suggestion is this, if you are young or accident prone, get insurance. You will be happy you did. At the most you will wait a few days for your new Shadow to arrive in the mail.

New Page: ‘68 Things’ to do with a Smartphone

For awhile I have been wanting to provide a more inclusive guide to the Windows Mobile Standard Shadow than just the front page here. If you look to the right in the menu, just below ‘Ask Mike’ you can see a link that will take you to the new page ‘68 Things‘. It is meant as a primer for the new user and a Table of Contents for our How-To’s. I don’t expect it to stay 68 things forever, but instead I expect it to grow over time.

You might notice that not every item has a link. That is intentional and is a preview of some of the How-To’s to come.  It is real fun being able to make these How-to’s and write informative articles as I learn along the way as well. So if you have questions about something do these steps in order to find the best results faster: use the search function up top, use the search function in the forums, if you haven’t found an answer yet the best place to ask one is in the forums as more fellow Shadow owner’s visit there on a regular basis. Remember, AllShadow.com is mobile friendly so be sure to save a bookmark on your phone as well.

Enjoy the super list!

Day One With the Skyfire Browser

skyfiredayone.jpg

The more I use Skyfire the more I like it. I keep giving myself reasons to use it. Did you know it was Valentine’s Day? Yeah! So I used it to check movies on Yahoo’s Full Movie site instead of the mobile site. I also showed my brother his company’s website on the browser. And then… › Continue reading

Browser War II: Major Players On Stage

The major players are on the stage now, with releases ’sometime soon’ for most, and the mobile community has only to wait to catch some browsing goodness.

SkyFire promises a mobile experience similar to the desktop, is light on the CPU as it renders on the server side. That is the downside though. Someone can easily have access to what you are viewing. So for those with privacy concerns, this might not be the browser for you.

Opera has Mobile and Mini. Mini requires Java on your device to use and can be buggy because of this implementation. Mini also uses server side rendering. The current version of Opera Mobile is nice with the Tabbed Browsing and other features, but doesn’t pack enough punch for me to shell out some dollars for it. The upcoming version is positioned to change my stance though. With desktop-like browsing accomplished all on the device this appears to be the winner for me, but we will have to wait and see.

As of right now Mozilla’s Mobile Firefox looks like it wants to fight but no solid release date is in site. The super old version of it was nice to play with but had way too many bugs to be useful. The new version is a completely new beast and has one major advantage over SkyFire and Opera Mobile, it’s free. The downside is that it is open source and sometimes these projects take way too long to come to fruition.

There are other 3rd party browsers and plugins for PIE that enhance it’s functionality but none that complete the experience.

If you want to stay on track with Skyfire, sign up for notifications at their website.

Opera has a nice page about the upcoming Opera Mobile 9.5 and provides a sly download link for the current version 8.95 if you haven’t tried it out yet.

If you want to keep track of Mobile Firefox or even contribute to the project a good place to start is their Project Page. There are meeting minutes, bug tracking and to do lists galore for the devout.

Stayed tuned into AllShadow.com for full coverage of this war as it pertains to Windows Mobile Standard/Smartphone and the T-Mobile Shadow.
