Adam Z Lein at pocketnow.com has an informative article about how public libraries offer all kinds of DOWNLOADABLE digital content including movies, music, audio books, and eBooks. I didn’t know about this until I saw the article so I decided to do some checking on my own. Your library might do the same. For the most part you will need your Library card number and PIN. I checked mine, and it turns out that the Greater Phoenix Library system does offer downloads. I conducted a quick grab and check out so I could tell you how well these work. Read Full Entry

Awhile ago we posted about updating the Shadow to the newer software version released from T-Mobile. Apparently there are a lot of Shadow’s still being sold with the older software. The new software fixes a lot of problems and it is actually in everyone’s best interests to update before you get your phone too personalized. If you haven’t yet then you need to read Taking the Plunge: How To Update Your Shadow.

Also, if you own a T-Mobile Wing a new software update was just released that improves performance and memory management. You can download this update on T-Mobile’s Upgrade page.

As a further public service announcement, there has been an update for the Dash for awhile that fixes some problems as well. Available from the same page.


How To App Unlock Your Shadow

Many times a program will need you to Application Unlock your phone (App Unlock). Most of the time the software won’t tell you this needs to happen but someone eventually figures it out. So to alleviate this problem it is best to app unlock your phone early on. Download the App Unlock cab, place it on your Shadow and run it from there. The appropriate registry entries will be made.


How to Take Your Movies With You: DVD Catalyst

DVD collections range from meager to impressive yet with all those discs in little plastic binders how can you comfortably take them with you? This is an age of convenience right? The best way to take your favorite DVD with you is to convert it into a format compatible and small enough to fit on your Shadow. This is where DVD Catalyst comes into play. Over the years I’ve used and tested many DVD conversion programs and I confidently say that DVD Catalyst is the best.

The main screen has no fluff and gets right down to business without confusing the process too much. Nearly every setting you need to mess with is displayed right at the start. To begin conversion run DVD Catalyst and insert the DVD you want to convert. DVD Catalyst will begin scanning the DVD and display the results. Voice Commands

The Shadow comes with Microsoft Voice Command 1.6. This little gem can be very handy in a variety of different ways. If you want some in depth information about it go to Start > Voice Command > Menu > Help. Included here is a list of the commands it recognizes. Voice command works with Bluetooth headsets as well and can announce incoming calls, upcoming appointments over the headset if you want it to. The best times to use Voice Command are when you are in a slight rush and don’t have the luxury of looking at your phone’s screen and pressing buttons. If you find you like Voice Command set your Shadow’s shortcut key to launch it quickly. I find the Short Press to be a better option than the long press, there are a few people that like to set the Short Press and the Press and Hold to launch Voice Command.

Handle SMS from the Today Screen

If you send and receive a great deal of text messages throughout the day then you might get tired of going back to the inbox all the time. SMS Bubbles to the rescue! From the Today screen you can view the contents of your incoming text message and decide to Save as read, reply, delete and more options from the bubble. There are more settings available in the Programs list under the Start menu once you have it installed. Adding this to Extreme Text and you are practically in text message heaven. Of course it’s free and available for download right here. Enjoy!

Yet Another Mobile Browser

Dave sent this one in: While everyone is waiting for the promising SkyFire browser there is yet another mobile browser to check out. TeaShark operates a bit like Opera Mini. It runs through the Java Manager and has a good range of features including some promised yet not implemented yet.

Features:

  • “Intelligent Mouse” for navigating
  • Landscape Mode
  • Multiple tabs
  • History
  • Bookmark management with color tagging (soon to be manageable via desktop browser as well)
  • Click and Search
  • Phone number recognition

  • In-line text editing
  • 2 level zoom

While it seems to be a bit more responsive than Opera Mini there is an occasional error (just press No when you encounter them). Additionally when mousing over an image or link it disappears and is replaced by a gray box that makes browsing a bit tedious. Remember The Milk

Remember The Milk is best described as a super Task/To-Do list organizer with many advanced features to help you stay on top of your important items. The only reason I am mentioning it here is that there is an application that will Sync your Remember The Milk lists with Windows Mobile. Specifically, there is a Smartphone version available and that means we can use it on the Shadow. Remember The Milk is a Web 2.0 service that is free to use for basic features but $25 dollars will grab you a year’s worth of Pro features including use of MilkSync. If you want to give it a try you can have a 15 day free trial of MilkSync to see if it fits the bill.

Some of the features of Remember The Milk (RTM) are:

  • Be notified via Instant Messenger, Email, SMS and more.
  • Use tags for as many lists as you want
  • Locate on Google Maps locations for tasks
  • Share, Send and Publish your lists
  • Add tasks from anywhere (browser, via email, mobile browser)
  • Synchronizes with Google Calendar and Gmail

MilkSync features:

  • Synchronizes with Mobile Outlook Tasks application
  • Two-way sync between Smartphone and RTM
  • Cradle sync or Over The Air
  • Scheduled Synchronization
  • Specify which lists to sync or all of them

Make Your Own Home Screens

Making your own Home Screens is now easier than ever thanks to HomeScreenBuilder. It’s free to use and supports nearly all of the Today screen plugins. It is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that enables you to customize the look and feel of your layout as well as enable or disable plugins as well as place them where you want. This is for the normal Windows Mobile Smartphone homescreen and won’t do anything for the NEO homescreen. If you want to give it a try head over to Madbeetle.com and get your copy. There are some advanced plugins available for some coin.

Control Your Phone from Your Desktop for Free

My Mobiler enables you to control your Shadow (or any Windows Mobile phone) from the desktop PC. You can cut/copy/paste between the desktop and phone as well as take screenshots and video. With a little advanced configuration of the Settings file you can even have it auto sort files that you drag and drop onto the phone. For example if your drag and drop a music file onto My mobile it will automatically place that file in the My Music folder on your phone. It works over USB, Bluetooth and Wifi blending the line of convergence. It is compatible with XP’s Activesync and Vista’s WMDC. The best part about My Mobiler is the price, Free. Use Skype on Windows Mobile

Did you know you can use Skype on Windows Mobile? The current version now works great on the Shadow and is compatible with other Windows Mobile Standard phones like the Dash as well. To get started click on the image above and then download the Smartphone version. Once it is downloaded to your desktop, sync your Shadow and run the installer. Everything should install just like any other program. After the installation is complete you can find Skype in your Programs list. Note, it is best that you be connected to Wi-Fi when using Skype.

Skype enables you to call internationally for free. You can even get a SkypeIn number that acts just like your Mobile number except the call is routed through Skype. Great for business or if you don’t want to give out your cell number. Windows Mobile Professional users that want to use Skype have a version as well. Enjoy!
