Yet Another Mobile Browser

Posted by Mike Benton on May 9th, 2008

Dave sent this one in: While everyone is waiting for the promising SkyFire browser there is yet another mobile browser to check out. TeaShark operates a bit like Opera Mini. It runs through the Java Manager and has a good range of features including some promised yet not implemented yet.

Features:

  • Full Web Page Browsing
  • “Intelligent Mouse” for navigating
  • Landscape Mode
  • Multiple tabs
  • History
  • Bookmark management with color tagging (soon to be manageable via desktop browser as well)
  • Click and Search
  • Phone number recognition
  • Smart web address entry
  • Find text
  • Built in web search
  • RSS Reader
  • In-line text editing
  • 2 level zoom

While it seems to be a bit more responsive than Opera Mini there is an occasional error (just press No when you encounter them). Additionally when mousing over an image or link it disappears and is replaced by a gray box that makes browsing a bit tedious. To get hold of TeaShark just go to www.TeaShark.com or point your mobile browser to wap.teashark.com

Remember The Milk

Posted by Mike Benton on May 5th, 2008

Remember The Milk is best described as a super Task/To-Do list organizer with many advanced features to help you stay on top of your important items. The only reason I am mentioning it here is that there is an application that will Sync your Remember The Milk lists with Windows Mobile. Specifically, there is a Smartphone version available and that means we can use it on the Shadow. Remember The Milk is a Web 2.0 service that is free to use for basic features but $25 dollars will grab you a year’s worth of Pro features including use of MilkSync. Make Your Own Home Screens

Posted by Mike Benton on April 28th, 2008

Making your own Home Screens is now easier than ever thanks to HomeScreenBuilder. It’s free to use and supports nearly all of the Today screen plugins. It is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that enables you to customize the look and feel of your layout as well as enable or disable plugins as well as place them where you want. This is for the normal Windows Mobile Smartphone homescreen and won’t do anything for the NEO homescreen. If you want to give it a try head over to Madbeetle.com and get your copy. There are some advanced plugins available for some coin.

Control Your Phone from Your Desktop for Free

Posted by Mike Benton on April 25th, 2008

My Mobiler enables you to control your Shadow (or any Windows Mobile phone) from the desktop PC. You can cut/copy/paste between the desktop and phone as well as take screenshots and video. With a little advanced configuration of the Settings file you can even have it auto sort files that you drag and drop onto the phone. For example if your drag and drop a music file onto My mobile it will automatically place that file in the My Music folder on your phone. It works over USB, Bluetooth and Wifi blending the line of convergence. It is compatible with XP’s Activesync and Vista’s WMDC. The best part about My Mobiler is the price, Free. To get your mitts on My Mobiler simply go to Mtux.com.

Enjoy!

Use Skype on Windows Mobile

Posted by Mike Benton on April 17th, 2008

Did you know you can use Skype on Windows Mobile? The current version now works great on the Shadow and is compatible with other Windows Mobile Standard phones like the Dash as well. To get started click on the image above and then download the Smartphone version. Once it is downloaded to your desktop, sync your Shadow and run the installer. Everything should install just like any other program. After the installation is complete you can find Skype in your Programs list. Note, it is best that you be connected to Wi-Fi when using Skype.

Skype enables you to call internationally for free. You can even get a SkypeIn number that acts just like your Mobile number except the call is routed through Skype. Great for business or if you don’t want to give out your cell number. Windows Mobile Professional users that want to use Skype have a version as well. Enjoy!

I can’t tell you how many times I have gone on a trip, either to another state or just to the grocery store, and forgotten something. Life is busy! Sometimes we need help remembering what to bring, what to pack, what to buy. Tasks and Appointment Reminders can’t do everything. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an easy to use, simple app that could remind you to pack that swimsuit or bring a power adapter? This is where MyList comes into the picture. Read on to see if it helps. Read Full Entry

Help Make gpsVP Better!

Posted by Mike Benton on April 9th, 2008

Vsevolod Shorin has announced that gpsVP is open sourced and is welcoming people to help develop and make it better. If you enjoy developing for Windows Mobile or just want to help develop the wiki you can join the project gpsVP at Google Code. For the beginner developer it could even be a learning experience just checking out the code.

Hopefully, we can get some AllShadow community members on the project to ensure compatibility.

Yet Another Method to Watch Online Video

Posted by Mike Benton on April 7th, 2008

If this keeps up we are going to need to create a category for all the Y.A.M.W.O.V.s people are finding. CyberBuddhah has come to the rescue again with an easy to use app that helps the Shadow make use of the RTSP protocol so more online video streams can be watched. In short you can finally watch videos from m.youtube.com.

Go to this thread on the streaming application and download the cab file to your Shadow. Install and restart your phone. Then open PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) and type in m.youtube.com in the address bar (Menu > Address Bar). Selecting a video will begin automatic playback. Easy!

Google2Go Brings Google Mobile Together

Posted by Mike Benton on April 2nd, 2008

It’s not owned by Google in anyway yet this freeware delivers a powerful punch by culminating all the Mobile Google services under one roof. Basically Google2Go is an instance of Internet Explorer wrapped with Google functionality. There is an easily accessible Menu (left soft key) that enables you to quickly access you favorite Google Services. It is a direct competitor to Yahoo Go and MSN Direct and in my opinion a much more elegant solution. The memory foot print is low and device compatibility is fairly broad. Video: The vTap Method for Watching Online Video

Posted by Mike Benton on April 1st, 2008

vTap is a standalone application that you simply install on your Shadow and it just works. The service draws from many online video sites. You can scroll through a listing of video results and read the short synopsis for each video. Selecting play will begin downloading the video. Once enough of it is downloaded you can begin playing or it will automatically play once the download is complete.

I have tested this over Wifi and EDGE and it works just fine. There are several settings available such as Audio Only (for those that just want to listen) as well as different video quality levels. One draw back is it automatically switches the input method to ABC. For those that prefer XT9 you have to switch it back in another application by holding down the * key.

Watch the video above and then point Pocket Internet Explorer to http://www.vtap.com to install it.

 Enjoy!
