Woah…this may be a stupid question, but I just figured I would ask… What is this whole “This input method may be able to collect all the text you type” business kinda freaked me out…
Is this just a standard warning or…is it something else?

Evan, it is a standard warning. However it MAY be put to nefarious means. However, T-Mobile reps are letting people know about this keyboard so I guess if something dirty happened with our info we could get all riotous about it

Oh wow, this new keyboard is quite fantastic. Is this an official htc dev? Any chance of google engineering something similar for Donut?
I must say though, with my mytouch default keypad, I’ve become quite proficient in using all touchscreen phones. I messed around with my buddy’s iphone and the spaced keys were so easy to type on in comparison. I recommend the cupcake keyboard for touch-pad training

Got this working on myTouch 3g. It’s a pretty good keyboard; my fat fingers like the bigger buttons and the prediction works great for it. Easy install. A little paranoid on the warning Android gives you on installing unapproved apps and such; hopefully I’ll get over it because this keyboard is fat finger friendly. antivirus app says my phone is clean after installing and after unchecking the “unknown application” check box.

I’m really loving this keyboard!
My only complaint is that it won’t stay in predictive text mode on the compact keyboard. Any one know how to fix it?

The warnings for the keyboard are the same as Better Keyboard, just a standard warning. I definitely like it better than standard and I think I like it better than Better Keyboard as well.

Installed on my G1 and loved it but my battery life suddenly dropped bit – I’ve been charging it twice a day instead of once. I just uninstalled to see if it gets better. Has anyone else had this problem?

Evan and Mike, I too am concerned about this warning for the Touch Input setting: “This input method may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers”. I sounds like a keylogger type of thing to me. Can anyone else shed some light on this? Thanks

Turns out the battery culprit was an update to Tridroid which changed some settings and left it with an always on internet connection, which I had installed the night before. However, when the Hero Keyboard is active, the G1 physical keyboard’s auto correct features don’t work most of the time. Any ideas there?

Works great!
My HTC hero SEA version, didn’t have the Compact Qwerty keyboard and i was totally frustrated at it. It only had Touch Input (Chinese) available, and cause of some extra buttons, made the keys much smaller.
This works great to restore the original Touch Input, with compact qwerty keyboard. Only down side is, in the full Qwerty keyboard mode, i don’t get the dictionary mode.

okay i had this keyboard installed on andriod version 1.5 and never once had a problem with it. i finally got the 1.6 update today so i downloaded it once 1.6 was downloaded the htc hero keyboard just stopped working everytime it would foreclose. so i tried deleating it and installing again that didnt work, tried puting a new zip file on my sd card and installing it and it didnt work finally tried a factory reset and installing it again and still didnt work. so did google put something in the update that keeps it from working if so thats pretty shitty. or i am just simply doing something wrong. is there anyother way besides rooting to get the keyboard on the g1. any information would be greatly helped and please email me at ferrarilover1950@gmail.com with any info on my problem i would really hate to have to buy a ok keyboard when i should be able to get the best (hero keyboard) for free. thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Same thing happened to me as above. I just reinstalled factory reset and reinstalled and it still force closes.
Don’t upgrade to 1.6 if you like ur keyboard.
I guess we need a hack to get get the hack to work, or an 1.6 updated htc keyboard. Somebody out there will do it.

My son-in-law is a programmer and uses Android. He just upgraded to 1.6 and likes the features for navigation. I told him about the keyboard issue and it will just be a matter of time before any app that is actively maintained will eventually be upgraded for 1.6. Donut also broke Toggle Settings. I like the keyboard so much that I am not upgrading yet. And… still… please… does anyone know about the security of this keyboard? When selecting touch input, we get a message that says others can view what it typed! Any ideas? Anything to really worry about?
I have not had a battery problem to speak of. I am using the MyTouch. I am gathering that the G1’s eat batteries for breakfast, lunch and dinner with apps running in the background.

okay from my previous comment i have tried everything i could ever think of to fix the comment. even reformated my sd card but nothing is working. now i know its nothing to do with 3rd party keyboards because i downladed toch pal and that one works flawlessly. so i have come to the conclusion that something goes wrong inbetween the transfer proceess from saving it to extracting it to installing it. so i think the only way to get the htc hero keyboard working on the g1 and mytouch is to make it into an app in the market. if thats even possible since htc did desine it. maybe they can i dont know. but i also could be compleatly wrong and maybe i just havent thought of the one thing that could make it work. i dont know but its really starting to irratate me. i would conseder myself a electronic geek well simi geek i am good with electronics but not great. but i cant figure out how to fix this at all nothing is working.

There is a fix on another forum. Here is the link to it. I have not tried Better Keyboard or anything else because of the comments on this and a couple of other forums about this touch input keyboard. This is so fast and efficient and better than the Android keyboard. Per Scott’s post, I too am pretty good with tech gadgets. I am not a great like my son-in-law, but I am pretty intuitive. I managed to get this working and you should too. Kudos to the cyanogen dude on the post with this link.

I just upgraded my MyTouch about 30 minutes ago as of this post. I installed the apps from the link above.
Here is the step by step process I used:
Go to the Market and download Apps Installer
Download the files from the link above to your computer and you will see a link asking to buy the guy a beer.
Mount the phone to your computer using your USB cable that came with the phone.
Drag the two apps, Clicker.apk and HTC_IME.apk to your SD card on your phone
Go to application settings on your phone and enable Unknown Sources
go to Apps Installer and tap the icons and they will install.
To to browser, press and hold down the window where text is entered and you will get a choice as to the Input Method you want to use.
Use Touch Input.
Mine is working fine so far.

Got the keyboard working fine on my magic for a couple of days, then today, 7 Nov, my phone decided to update itself. When it finally reloaded after the ‘out of the box’ screen the touch keyboard will no longer work. I’m rather pee’d off because I have no idea what the update did except break the Hero keyboard.

There are several things you can do. Click and hold on a text field to bring up the Input Field options and then change to the default keyboard. Then get the updated keyboard from our Android Forums
