G1: Cupcake OTA Update is Live!
Phandroid has a picture of a G1 with the Android Update 1.5 showing some of the major goodies we’ve been waiting for:
- Record and watch video with camcorder
- Directly upload videos to upload and watch personal playlists
- On-screen qwerty keyboard (it should support theming)
- Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP)
- Improved homescreen widgets including media control
- Native Picasa support (already available as a downloadable app from Google)
- Much more
Keep an eye on your G1’s and let us when you get an update!

Anybody know yet if you can still root with Android Update 1.5. I really want to get apps2SD running on my G1 but I haven’t had the time to get this hooked up on mine. If that update screen comes up I am not sure what I want to do.

I have thought about rooting mine too. I just don’t think I should have to! That is the biggest flaw on this phone now is not being able to save and run apps from sd! I love my android but come on how har can it be to make that happen Google! I would much rather have that function over being able to take a crappy ultra low res. Grainey as hell video

Andrew: No Flash, many developers have been playing around with early Dev builds of Cupcake and no flash has been found. The funny thing is Adobe Flash has been submitted to Apple for completions but many doubt it will happen because of all Apples App restrictions toward there apps

i figure if flash ever comes to android it will just be a thing where you go to adobe’s web site and download it like you do on the computer if your browser doent have flash player on it already like the pc version of google chrome so it could still happen but probably not automaticly but adobe has a working beta somewhere because we have all seen the video of the guy using it on g1 at an adobe event but that does not mean it will ever happen too many rumors and stuff follow this phone around you need to do your own research when paying so much for a phone but at least google does update there phone software instead of just releasing a new phone that i think one thing android has over windows mobile but i also really like windows mobile thats why i kept my shadow when i bought the g1 but any this phone just keeps getting better and better so stay tuned

who told you this phone would have flash? This is what pisses me off. people expect things because they hear a rumor. If i told you that they were coming out with a microwave attachment, would you believe me? You cant believe everything you read on the internet. shocking, i know. cupcake or 1.5 if you will, was never meant to have flash, rc33 was never meant to have flash, and above all, the phone was never said it would ship with flash. from my understandings, adobe has said that phones with flash wont SHIP till 2010, which means the g2/htc magic/mytouch WILL NOT have flash. if adobe wants to release a version to android, google would have to rebuild the browser, it wont be something you download and install, but i could be wrong about that one

If you want Flash talk to Adobe, otherwise talk to a wall. Adobe owns Flash, not Google.

i got the update and I was so excited to have the keyboard and all the other features but I’m trying to figure out a way to goback bc my market won’t open and neither will my ringdroid app, my calender and who knows wat else. Does anyone kno a place where I can download a better update or have any suggestions on how I can fix mine because I don’t know what’s wrong with it

The way I understand it is some of the older apps and the market isn’t compatible with android 1.5 that’s why a lot of the devs have been updating there apps to be compatible with cupcake and its just one those things where the apps and market are behind as far as the update is concerned I don’t think its your phone lanee

I talked to T-mobile today and they said that the only update that is out is the rc33. I asked about the 1.5 update and they said it was just a rumor. How could that be when on another blog site I saw with my own two eyes a T-mobile website stating what the 1.5 update contains? Will someone clarify please? Thanks

This update situation is strange. Last time the updates rolled out my G1 was one of the first. With this update the Dev phones were updated a few weeks early intentionally so Dev’s could update their apps. It is possible that a few non-Dev phones slipped through the cracks.
Rooted G1’s can download the update manually via the web to their SD and update that way.
We will just have to wait I suppose

Can anyone explain to me why my android market vwont open at all? I read a blog somewhere that this update causes the market place not to run as an attempt to keep ppl from hacking their phones and limiting the whole open source thing

ther isa a bunch of sites that are saying that google is blocking access to the market portal as a result of the update. it also looks like there are two versions of the update the G(google) wich is causing the restriction and the H(htc) wich is allowing access to the market but no one knows exacly why why google is resticting access I know this probably doesn’t help much but its somewhat of an explanation.

You’re all incredibly misinformed.
The 2 (actually about 5 now) versions are for root users.
Google is NOT blocking the access its merely a bug.
They are NOT trying to keep you from root access. the adp phone have root access so that conclusion actually makes no sense.

The most people who are getting the ota update are in the uk and the people who got the update in the US are probably developers but well get it soon I talked to someone in g1 support today and they said its set to roll out but they haven’t been getting a date yet but they said as soon as they get it they are going to send it ota so just be patient the more you think about it the longer its gonna take

What do you mean how do I know? Its not my opinion either, just look at the facts. If google were doing that in an attempt to block root access, all root users would be having this problem. They aren’t. Only a small handful of users are having that problem. The adp phone has access to root, why would google release a phone with root if they didn’t want users to have it?
I didn’t mean any disrespect by the run on sentence thing and I’m not trying to put anyone down, it just irritates me when people say things when they have little to know about the subject. It causes me to rant in a fashion that’s probably not very pleasant, but I’m just trying to inform everyone. When someone posts something incorrect, it spreads like a wild fire. That’s why people thought 1.5 would have flash. I’m sorry if I offended anyone.
To the user that is having market troubles, do you have root? If so just use one of the other 1.5 builds out there. There’s about 5. If you don’t have root, id suggest trying a wipe. Also if you don’t have root and are having the market problem, that would just further prove my point that google isn’t trying to block root and its a random bug.

I have just received the “cupcake” update for my g1 and its not so good as everyone has gone on about yeah it looks better and they give you a fully working camcorder app (still can’t zoom)
and the onscreen keyboard helps but its not as great as people think but I haven’t had long to test it so I will carry on and see =D

I got the update last night. Pretty cool. You can see your homescreen background when the phone is locked and when you enter your pattern. There’s an option to have the phone vibrate when you’re connecting the dots in your pattern. Call and Favourites look different. On screen Keyboard of course. Camcorder. Now has a calendar widget (if that wasnt there before). Oh they have little android smilies now when you’re sending a text message.
Im still browsing around to see what else has changed but I wish I could have talked to google so they could have made some more adjustments. Does anyone know of a suggestion site where I can offer some lol?

well i think that is just not fair i have the G1 and my coworker does too he already has the update and i dont it seemes that the cupcake did get releasted but only 3-4 batches where released then thy decided to pospone the full blown push of the cupcake he likes to show off with the new features caus he knows i dident get the update but all is well in the carma world s he showed off the full q keyboard his phone froz and had to be rebooted thats why thay posponed he push so i guess i can wait

I just got my cupcake just 20 mins ago. I live in Indianapolis (a city that doesn’t have 3G) but I do travel to other cities alot that has it. I finally am getting to use my Motorola S9 Bluetooth headset now that my G1 has A2DP. Works fine! Played with the video recorder indoors and it seems to work okay. Can’t wait to try it outdoors.
Music player has received a facelift too.
