Install U.S. Cupcake, without Root – Forum
May 24th

ShadowFan2008 has put together a nice how-to in the forums for the AllShadow Community. A couple of notes first:
- Install at your own risk! Follow the instructions.
- Make sure the G1 is plugged into AC power FIRST. Don’t pull the battery. Be patient through out the process (It only takes about 15 minutes TOPS)
- There are bugs in this release. For me I have trouble with Gmail App and the Android Market. If either of those are important to you then don’t install this.
- About the ‘update.zip’ In the linked to how to it says not to rename the file ‘update.zip’ but just ‘update’. This is true if you are unable to see known file extensions. For example if you look in a folder and don’t see .zip or .doc after files then you have it turned off. If you can see extensions then go ahead and name it update.zip. If it says it can’t find ‘update.zip’ then you named it the wrong way.

If you want to learn more about the different builds of Cupcake, check of Mast3rMatt’s thread. There are also links to the older builds (like RC33) in there in case you don’t like this pre-release.
Thanks to Everyone who sent this in and posted in the forums.

New Custom HTC Android UI
May 19th
Haykuro is this mystery guy who manages to get his hands on some sweet roms from time to time. He’s supposedly a 17 yr old Chinese kid, so more props to him. In this video he’s showing off what appears to be a custom HTC homescreen and user interface for Android. Notice the HTC Gadgets option when he adds a widget. This is supposedly the interface that will come on the HTC Hero. For a glimpse into the future check out the video.
Thanks to Mark D and Phonedog.

YouTube – OSX theme on Android – Sweeter Home.
Mac Fans rejoice! There is a theme available that includes a dock that spans across the three Android home screens. The download is in beta and some data doesn’t save consistently so use to your own frustration, er, enjoyment!
Cupcake Delayed…Going Stale
May 18th
From T-Mobile’s Website:
UPDATE:
G1 community,
We’d like to provide an update on the rollout of Android 1.5 for T-Mobile G1 customers.
We are working diligently to get Android 1.5 out as soon as possible, while aiming to ensure a consistent, positive experience for our customers. We’re finalizing the build this week to ensure optimal functionality and smooth delivery. Therefore, the rollout schedule has been reset by approximately a week, and we expect all G1 customers will have the update by early June.
Your device will notify you when the update is available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
I feel your frustrations! I’m just going to stop talking about Cupcake until it’s on my phone. Enjoy!

Samsung Joining the T-Mobile Smartphone Gang
May 18th
The FCC recently passed Samsung i7500 which comes to the US bearing the 1700 mhz band and Android. It’s going to have a 3.2 inch 320 by 480 touchscreen, WiFI, GPS, and a 5 MP camera as well as a MicroSDHC card slot and a STANDARD 3.5mm jack! So if HTC’s hardware isn’t putting frosting on your Cupcake you might want to give Samsung’s appliances a spin.
