Android OTA Update Begins
RC33 has begun rolling out over the air to G1 users. Unfortunately this isnt the CupCake update we were hoping for. However two noticeable changes on this update are the addition of Latitude to Google Maps and Voice Search.
Latitude allows you to share your location with family and friends and vice versa through the familiar Google Interface. The same information is available on the browser version of Google Maps. The newest version of Google Maps for Windows Mobile includes this ability.
Search by Voice allows you to do just that. Now when you search from the G1 you can speak the phrase you want to search for. Its too early to tell how well this compares to the pre-existing Live Search for windows mobile. To access the search quicker on your G1 create a shortcut on your desktop to Voice Search.
Anyone notice anything else that pleases them in this update?

Just Got My Update…..Voice Search Is Nice & The Latitude Map Thing……I Noticed On Your Desktop Screen Or Whatever. Usually If U Have A Icon That Says “Power Manager” for instance It Used To Look Like This On The Screen Icon. “Power Mana… But Since The Update If U Highlight The Icon It Scrolls And Shows Full Name Of The Icon.

Still no update. I dont really care though as the voice search and latitude are not a big deal to me. We need auto rotate and a virt keyboard. That with flash eventually well make me happy.

I am looking forward to this update, I have been playing around with latitude on igoogle and with my wifes BB Pearl. I am wondering if anybody knows, can you still root your G1 if you get this update? I have been thinking about rooting but have not decided if it is worth it yet.

if you don’t have root and still on the stock g1 with RC30 update you can get the rc33 update now just
1. get the RC33 update from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=479571
2. Rename it from signed-PLAT-RC33-from-RC30.f06aa9b3.zip to update.zip, and place it on your Micro SD card. make sure to unmount it and disconnect the USB cable now.
3. Turn off your G1, then turn it back on by holding the Home+End keys until you see an icon popup after the T-Mobile G1 logo.
4. From the icon screen, open the keyboard and hit Alt+L.
5. Press Alt+S to begin the update. Remember, the update needs to be named update.zip.
6. Once it finishes, follow the onscreen instructions and press Home+Back to finish.
7. The G1 will reboot a few times to flash different parts of the firmware.ther is a new Radio Image Included
If all went well, you should now be running the latest update, RC33. To make sure hit Menu > Settings > About Phone > scroll to Build Number. You should see RC33 in the build number.
Notes:
Some microSD cards may need to be formatted fat32

i will admit the voice search is a neat feature. other sites are reporting auto-rotate for the screen, but it isn’t doing this on mine. i don’t know if its actually part of the update or not.
however, i am still not satisfied at all with this phone. a real waste of money. where are all of those cool “open-source” apps we were promised? still nothing anybody actually wants or would be considered productive. its still just a “glorified” phone. hardly “smart” at all.

Got the update. Voice recognition is confused. Lattitude… I don’t want everyone to find me. *you know who you are*
Still no A2DP. Being that I use my G1 a lot for shoutcast radio, still gotta wait to bluetooth to my car stereo.
*le’sigh*

I wish people would either sell there g1 to some one that wants it and stop complaining or just be patiant and stop complaing its nobodys fault but people who got the phone without researching what it did first they just got it because it had a touch screen I knew that it didn’t have a video recorder and do we really need an onscreen keybord it has a perfecly physical keybord its what separates this phone from other touchscreen phones you can use the keybord as controls for games instead of having a bunch of control crap on screen like the iphone and it works good as a keybord plus the patiant ones who got the phone will be rewarded with flash and that one app already on the market that takes video albeit not very good video at least proves that it can be done cell phone video usually sucks anyway but i am very happy with this phone but not very happy with the complainers that got the phone be patiant it will get better otherwise get rid of the phone and leave the satisfied people alone

let them complain. they got the right to. the phone aint perfect. let me complain about the people that complain about those that complain about their phones.

The iphone wasn’t perfect iether when it was released in fact I remember the term paper wieght being thrown aroun but it got better all I am saying is if you don’t like the g1 that’s your problem but making complaints not constructive critisism doesn’t help

I love my g1 and received the update yesterday but no auto rotation. Keeps saying app failed. To all the complainers of the complainers who are complaining……please keep it to a minimum…..if yoy need.to rand do it on a forum.

To all of the complainers of the complainers that are complaing of complaining haters of the complainers…guess what??? Its just a phone. a pretty nice phone at that which in my opinion, has outdone itself in areas that the iphone is STILL improving on. Take a chill pill, rejoice in the fact that you were even given the breath of life today by God and continue to play with the phone and enjoy it for what it is….A PHONE.
