The Shadow II is the Only Windows Mobile Phone with UMA

I think that this feature of the Shadow has been overlooked, and it’s a pretty cool one. UMA, or Unlicensed Mobile Access, will not only reduce your phone bill, but may lead you to replace your home phone with your cell phone if you haven’t done so already. The Shadow II will be the only Windows Mobile phone so far to have this feature.
Basically, UMA will allow you to use your phone regularly when you are not near WiFi, so, if you’re on a call, you are using your minutes. Then, when you get home, or when you’re at one of T-Mobile’s 8,000 hotspots, your call will seamlessly jump onto the WiFi network, and you won’t use any of your minutes. There is a $10 flat fee associated with using UMA on T-Mobile, but after you pay that fee each month, you can use your phone an unlimited amount over WiFi. For more on this, check out T-Mobile’s website that talks about T-Mobile @Home. Also, thanks to Windows for Devices for the nice UMA elaboration.

It’s great that they’re offering this feature on a WM device. It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t take advantage of the new T-Mobile 3G network; and it’s only equipped with a mid-200mhz processor and has no 3.5mm jack. Would’ve been an acceptable device had it come out in 2005. As is, it’s antiquated at launch

The battery life with wi-fi turn on is horrid already with the Shadow, imagine what its going to be like with the uma

Actually you can use the UMA on any WiFi network(that you can log-on), not only HotSpots or @Home routers.
I don’t mean to crush anyones fantasy about UMA, but that “seamless switch on a call from UMA to cell towers”, doesn’t always happen. While using UMA, expect drop calls and shotty communication, even if you are within 20 feet of the WiFi router. :/
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have the UMA feature on my mobile, for the fun of it.
UMA turned-on will lower your battery level fast, so keep that A/C charger nearby. Tmobile includes a charger-stand with their UMA-Nokia.

The first Shadow was pretty much antiquated at launch too. Get with the program T-Mobile! You used to be cutting edge. Spent too much time developing UMA and now the other carriers are blowing you out of the water with 3G.
No way I’d ever buy another Shadow, especially if it’s not 3G.
I hate my ShadowI with a passion. It fell out of my hands just as I predicted it would since it’s so “top heavy” while pressing the keys. Landed on the floor and broke. POS! It was never fun to use and painfully slow to web browse on Edge. The “ease of use” keyboard I never got used to.
If it didn’t cost me $200 to opt out of my contract, I’d be over at AT&T buying myself an iPhone.
