Do You Miss the Shadow?

For those of you that have made the switch from Shadow to G1, are you missing the Shadow? The G1 is a great device, but there is no denying that its capabilities are limited in some areas if you compare it to the Shadow. What prompted this question was an interesting thread that tonyoung08 started in our G1 General forum, to which there have been several replies with lists of things that the Shadow can do and the G1 cannot. Here are some excerpts from ShadowFan2008’s list…
- True Voice Dialing
- Incoming Texts being read out loud
- Bluetooth file transfers
- SlingMobile (watching Live TV / Tivo)
- Flash Enabled Web Browsing (Skyfire)
- Video MMS sending
- Video creation
- Skype Mobile
- Many simple Camera settings (resolution, brightness, contrast, zoom, color temp settings)
- Saving apps to your SD card for easy installation after MASTER RESETS
- Simple screen captures
That said, there are of course things that the G1 can do that the Shadow cannot. Here are some…
- Download apps easily from the on-phone app store
- Use GPS for location-based services
- Use autofocus on the camera to take better pictures
- Use 3G for fast internet anywhere (where supported)
- Quickly download music via AmazonMP3
- Set up multiple customizable Home Screens
- WebKit-based browser out of the box
So – Shadow owners gone G1, do you miss the Shadow? And if yes, how are you dealing with any shortfalls that you are finding, such as those listed above?

i am not missing my shadow AT ALL. the only problem i have with the G1 is the battery life. but then again, the shadow didn’t have good battery life either, so it’s not a big deal. the touch screen combined with the UI is AMAZING. there is no way i can go back to Windows Mobile now. and my favorite feature may be the notification bar. i hated having to press ‘home’ then scroll down to the messages panel (on 6.1) just to read a text.

I miss TCPMP. but i’m sure someone will make an application like that for the g1.
I miss saving mms content so easily
I miss the shortcut buttons.

I responded in the thread a while back, but ill throw an answer here too.
I love my shadow, so much so that i still carry it around with me haha. Although, im very happy with my switch to the g1, sure i miss a few things like tcpmp, skyfire, the hacks and themes, but in due time i believe well have that for the g1. I just sent Dom a message a bit ago about some of the awesomeness that is the g1.
i want a screen shot app, an easy one anyway. i was going to start a post your g1 home screen thread last night, but upon trying…i just gave up.
Also, the thread was started by “Ronyoung08″ not “tonyoung08″ haha

I miss the size of the Shadow but other then that the G1 is a dream come true. The problems that other people talk about with the G1 I haven’t experienced.

I missed my Shadow so much that I actually switched back to it. Just this past week I sold my G1 and went back to my Shadow. The G1 just didn’t work out for me.

I too loved my shadow, I hacked the hell out of that phone and then I would show off to others prompting ohhsss and wowwwssss. It was small and had actaul video recording! Their were themes and emulators but the shadows glory days are over, the g1 is just so good! Fast, easy web browsing not to mention flash coming in a few months, huge screen and some really cool apps like park mark, mario simulator and barcode scanner. If the shadow 2 had better specs id buy it but sadly……g1 it is. And I’m quite happy.

i don’t miss that son of a b****, lol excuse me, but yeah it was good when i first got it, i have upgraded to the samsung behold, i always upgrade anyway, when a better phone comes out, i was so close to getting the g1, but after reading and playing with the phone in person, i decided not to just yet, so i just got the behold, which is a nice little phone also….i am wishing that the blackberry storm would be availabe for use with tmobile also

I love my shadow and will not have the g1. I went to the store and played with it. I don’t like how it works. I can do alot of things on my shadow. I will not go to g1!!!!! SHADOW!!!! The way to go!!!

the behold? you really got the behold over the g1? why??? it isnt even a smartphone.
as for the shadow, a lot of the things you could do with it was because of the OS, not the shadow. those same things could have been done with nearly all windows mobile handsets. yeah, i liked my shadow…but you guys are giving it way too much credit. lol

I don’t miss my shadow not one bit! Window mobile sucks. If it wasn’t for this site I would have been got rid of it. On the other hand, I love my G1!! The first cell phone to give me a wow factor. Beside, the shadow WAS good but now there is G1. I am on my G1 now writing a comment!!!

….the G1 is terribly ugly. Sure the touch screen is nice, but the G1 capabilities is certainly not worth the upgrade for me. I rather hold out with my shadow until another phone comes out that can truly wow me.

i miss my shadow… its actually in the ocean write now… stupid high tide… thats why i upgraded… i actually called tmobile a few days ago to get a shadow instead of my g1 but i was outta my 14 day window… i miss nintendo, t9, video capture, task manager, hell even the slide feature… oh well g1 it is

@ mike, yeah i got the behold over g1, i am not planning on keeping the behold forever, i heard that there are more awesome phones coming out in around summer 09, also i heard that the htc diamond will be a shadow lll, so i am gonna wait, the only thing i liked about the g1 is the huge screen itself, THATS ALL, it has no accerlometer (however you spell it)………i am praying that tmobile gets the new improved touch diamond

Well I don’t have the G1 but have put it through it’s paces enough to know that I much prefer my Shadow. It can do so much more fun stuff. First the freedom of Windows Mobile. I know that may sound stupid cause I used “Freedom” but really all the cool things it can do. Dude, Nintendo on your phone….Evernote….Skyfire….I don’t need to download from an app store…The whole internet is my playground with my Shadow. Sure it’s the OS that makes it great but that is the point! Plus, it looks better than the G1 anyway!

I just got my G1 I love it. I had had the Shadow ,But for me i like the G1 better. net surffing is great

@Derrik
The g1 does have an accelerometer. As for the touch diamond, don’t know if you’ve used the one from sprint, or a pro from any of the other companies, its not that great. It has a vga screen, but its about the same size as the shadows, too small for touching in my opinion. I prefer my g1 and my shadow over the diamond. So glad I didn’t import one. The shadow 3 won’t be a diamond, its from a different series all together. Shadows aren’t a touch family.
Back on topic
I’m thinking once android gets out of its rc updates and onto its first real release, when they release flash and the on screen keyboard, and when they release the widget sdk, there won’t be a comparasion anymore. The g1 will be dominate.

well i am thinking about getting the g1, i don’t know yet

I miss my shadow too…..even though my girl, who lives with me has it lol. But all the things mentioned that it can do can be easily matched in a update from google. I do miss the ringtone “melancholy”, that tone was sweet. But other than that, my shadow was cool, and when I get her the motozine, she will be giving me my phone back! Lol.

I love my Shadow. It is by far my favorite phone I have owned so far. I am always finding new ways of using it in my daily life thanks to allshadow.com. This is also one of my my favorite sites I have bookmarked. So I’m done sounding sappy now.

lol i feel u guys, i plan to get the g1 but the shadow is not a phone u wanna just throw away, the way htc phones are with the battery life….. and if ur a phone junky like me and love playing with ur phones, ur gonna end up having the g1 and the shadow. my shadow isnt working by the way but i planned to get it fixed and up and running whether i get the g1 or not, i still love my shadow

I do not miss my shadow one bit. I got the white g1, and that phone is nuts. Its honestly like a mini lap top, and with the open sourse system, essentially any software gripe can be fixed or improved as time goes on. Im glad I sold my shadow!

i went from a blackberry to a shadow and i on occassion miss the blackberry for simple features like copy and paste free internet and downloads the blackberry’s messaging fully customizable home screen that didn’t require modification to my device and not to mention lightning fast data transfer and easy to use adn also the suretype system was way better than xt9 and most of all how fast it was quick startup i miss the most

the only thing i like about the g1 is the touchscreen and the internet. other than that what is it really good for? it’s been out for almost 2 months now and email still sucks (unless you use google); and all of the apps on the market place are useless. if you can’t use your head to figure out how much to tip someone…
is this really a “smartphone”? how often do you actually use gps? i haven’t needed it yet.
everyone keeps saying how great it will be, but when is that going to happen? when do we get the greatness every one is referring to? what are the developers waiting for? they have had plenty of time from pre-launch to now. where are the apps?
say what you want about windows mobile, but i was a lot more productive on my shadow than the g1. if having standard working features like camera settings, video capture, exchange email, office docs, pdf, etc, etc, etc. means windows mobile sucks, then i guess i would rather have a phone that sucks.
i’ll give it another month or two, but if i don’t start seeing some “greatness”, the g1 will end up in the trash.
and that’s my 2-1/2 cents….

let me tell u about the shadow
when i 1st got the phone i was on it every hour i had it plug up next to my bed so i could use it all night, allshadow.com showed me all these great things u could do with it, i loved the possiblities
then my shadow screen broke, and i didn’t have insurance so i was back to regular phones well pretty much regular, so last month i couldn’t take it anymore i called t-mobile and added a line so i could get a shadow 4 $50
lol when i got that piece of shit i was like this is it? the emulators ran extra slow on it, all the software i had saved from my last shadow on cp were all boring, and skyfire was cool but still slow cause the shadow is slow
i called t-mobile and made the switch 2days later
i sugest getting the G1 yeah its missing things now but they come out soon enough, besides there are many cool things to be downloaded of the market as well, though that may be dangerous
about 1 year ago
and the reason all the good apps aren’t out yet is cause they’re all free until january when new developers come out some will charge but, really u cant expect the free apps to be top of the line unless they’re sponserded by google
about 1 year ago
and who will pay for apps, lol that will draw people away from it more

well im just waiting to see more good thing for the g1 i love my shadow and im not completly sold on the g1 and im one of those that will upgrade as soon as a new phone cames up i just think t mobile in all its greatness its not trying hard enough for us , just check all of the other carriers and see how many great phones they had not to mention that 3g is hard to get on most areas at least as of right now and back to the phones i got in to t mobile uk by accident and all the phones over seas are bad ass why are we always stuck with the cheap and down graded stuff
if i could get 3g on the omnia that would be my phone or the htc hd
well thats just my opinion

Decisions decisions… I have been wanting to upgrade my T Mobile phone, but I am not pleased with either the Shadow or the G1 yet. The Shadow so far is my next best choice, but it lacks the full web browsing. I won’t get the G1 until they change a few things- The keys are harder to “press” and the “chin lip” tipped upwards is in the way of the keyboard. Also the Java missing? C’Mon what browser is any use without Java???
I’m waiting as long as I can for a G”2″? (My Razr V3 is fully hacked and does everything I need, Except speed online…)

I will be replacing my shadow with something like the HTC S740, or possibly the new ipaq voice messenger (although im not sure I could live with a optical joystick).
The G1 is a brick. I would never even consider a phone thats so seriously ugly.
Also, the idea of having a phone that runs open source linux is just unimaginably geeky.

comparing the phones realse dates and prices the shadow beats the g1

gah t mobile is forcing me to take a shadow over g1… i had a sidekick that broke four times. hope this site helps me optomize it, make it fun, useful.

Loved the shadow until I got the g1!!! Now I have no patience for the shadows slow arse cpu. Skyfire would rock if the shadow could handle it! My shadow is even overclocked and still can’t keep up. Cupcake comming soon, flash comming soon after that. Face it G1 is BOSS

the Shadow is the better phone based simply off the fact that it is windows based. the possibilities are endless. I mean you can do any thing basically. the g1 you have to use that market shit. if the market crashes or anything happens everyone is mad. i can put any windows capable program on my phone and it is all the way hacked. shadow for life and i have skyfire browser.

To be honest i do in a way. The reason being, is one that im sure most would agree with. SKYFIRE. With skyfire i didnt need flash at all and the processing rate of the streaming videos wasnt too fast or too slow. I loved the clarity of the videos. I dont know how well we will be able to view streaming media once we receive the Flash update for the G1. I saw the video of flash working on the G1 in November and it was actually not that bad. I dont know what is taking them so long to release the update for it though.
Other than the skyfire browser, im straight on the shadow. i love the applications that are available on android lol. The Swartzch unleashed allows me to karate chop my new born son and he gets a kick out of it lol.

i just ordered the new shadow to replace my original one. i had the choice between the shadow and g1, but i really don’t think i can part with the activesync function. i mean, if you wipe your phone out, your numbers and stuff are RIGHT THERE on your comp. i don’t even know if the g1 does this or not (my way of asking if it does)

I had the G1 and got the Shadow 2009. I liked my shadow but the battery life was horrible irritating. I need a phone to last me the best part of daylight and the Shadow does. I love not having to charge my phone the last 3 hours of my work day everyday just to make it home. So,I am loving my shadow……

I have had my shadow for like 6 months and for the first 3 months I like it alot. Since then the WIFI no longer works, usually I have to tap the call end button sveral times to end a call and it drops calls ALOT (I have 2 other older phones that I thankfully have as backup and they DON’T ever drop calls in the same areas that my SHITOW does). I keep hearing how good HTC phones are, but I don’t think I want to get burned again so I will be staying away from these wonderful pieces of technology…lol. Sorry I can’t even type that without laughing… both middle fingers up to HTC and tmobile.

sorry about the spelling errors in my last post. I am just so mad at the company that made that piece of crap.
