Updated: Shadow 2 Hits the FCC: New Images and Info!
Updated: 3G conjecture, processor specs, loudspeaker placement

Image 1: angled view of the Shadow 2 showing the hardware buttons, scroll wheel and charging port
Shadow Lovers get excited; the new Shadow 2 is making its rounds at the FCC. Now we have more pictures and information about the specs. From the manuals it appears that it will support the HotSpot@Home service. 1700 MHz band is mentioned in the testing documents early on but disappears later, the user manual clearly shows the 1700 mhz band (3G) in the specifications (keeping our fingers crossed) so the word is that it probably won’t have 3G, but it does still have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It will also have an upgraded 260 mhz processor. Keep Reading for more photos!

Image 3: view of the back of the Shadow 2 showing the Camera and the loudspeaker opening what appears to be a sliding lens.

Image 4: Front view of the Shadow 2 showing hardware buttons, screen and the person taking a picture J Note the rounded Send, End, Home and Back buttons

Image 5: MiniUSB adapter dongle. Note the two round ‘ports’, one appears to be for 2.5mm and the furthest appears to be a 3.5mm jack

Image 6: The keyboard is almost identical as the first Shadow, but now has a slight curve

I have that dongle, and while it does have a LED, it’s on the end of the larger of the 2 ‘blocks’, not the round opening you spotted. Those are the headset-with-mic jacks, one is 3.5mm, the other 2.5mm. It’s a standard HTC dongle that you can purchase for about $15 elsewhere, like MobilePlanet.com (that’s where I got mine) There are 2 that are very similar, the one pictured is the newer one they came out with to more closely match the styling of the Touch Diamond.
As for the phone itself, T-Mobile flipped on the switch for their 3G service and is celebrating with the release of a phone representative of features available in 2005
No 3G; no GPS; no 3.5mm headset jack; ultra-slow processor; and a low-rez screen.
With every other major US carrier launching 3G Diamonds, Touch Pros, and a slew of others; how’d we get stuck with this piece of junk?!

ITS TIME TO SWITCH FROM T-MOBILE

Big disappointment already, if you already own a shadow.
UPGRADES are: UMA,(260MHz CPU vs 201MHz Shadow 1), and windows 6.1
Im guessing over half of T-Mo customer dont use UMA, but a nice feature regardless and thats pretty much it. If you have a little tech savy you can put win6.1 on the current shadow and 260 vs 201 CPU will not be that much difference since the phone has the same exact ROM/RAM as Shadow I.
All of T-Mo competitors are using 400 or 528 Mhz CPU in similar non touch phones now. Shadow 2 has the same okay 2MP camera and same SLOW usb1.1 port, so if you bought the shadow when it first came out, you will wait 15 months for pretty much the same exact phone with very minor upgrades.
Theres no reason T-Mobile should not have tried to use the Touch Dual hardware since it is very similar to the Shadow design wise.
So way to go T-Mo with your continued efforts of mediocre and crippled phones.

Makes me glad I jumped to the G1! The shadow was a cool phone but this looks more like the shadow 1.5, aside from a couple cosmetic updates there isnt any difference. Not to mention after using the G1 with 3g there is no way I could ever go back to using only edge w/ no touch screen!

I was looking forward to the shadow 2 until I just read these specs, ill probably get a samsung behold or a g1 or maybe drop t-mobile and go for the Iphone

i don’t think this phone will get many sells, i sold my original shadow and upgraded to the samsung behold by tmobile, and i have to say that phone is awesome, touch screen phones are in, good luck to the people who will waste money on this phone

Well I don’t think it will be a waste of money but if you already have the Shadow 1 then I would be looking for another phone. We have had so much fun with our Shadow’s on this website so I wouldn’t say this phone is a waste but they could have done so much better. I will likely jump ship for the iphone. It is just so well put together. The touch thing is awesome

I agree 100% with Steve, The Touch Dual 3G with GPS, the option of the Shadowy interface, or TouchFlo 2D, would’ve made for an acceptable Shadow2… I’d even have overlooked the omission of a 3.5mm jack for this combo

I’ve had many touchscreen phones in my time and the Shadow is still one of my favorites (even though it isn’t touch screen). I went from a touch screen windows mobile device to the Shadow and at first I thought I wouldn’t like it but after awhile I noticed that there isn’t much more you can do with a touch screen that you can’t without.
In fact I get irritated at touch screens when they don’t register the tap, the wrong ‘button’ lights up or it answers a call in my pocket. Additionally you can’t text and drive with a touch screen as well as you can with the Shadow. In fact it’s easier texting while doing anything with the Shadow than any other Windows Mobile phone (I said WINDOWS MOBILE!
) The same goes for email replies.
IMO the Shadow keyboard is better than a full qwerty because you don’t need two thumbs nor do you need to constantly look at the keyboard to see if you’re tapping the right keys.
On the other hand, the Shadow doesn’t NEED a big processor because it isn’t running ‘touch’ services. Yes it can be slow at times but I’m thinking the 260mhz will make up for it.
Touch screens are cool if you’ve never had one. The novelty does wear off. Then there are the different TYPES of touch screens. The G1 and iPhone screens are capacitive meaning you need a special stylus to properly draw a picture where as most Windows Mobile screens are resistive and you can actually use them as notepads.

The Shadow is aimed at the low end market. It’s not appropriate to compare it to phones in a different market. I would be surprised if the price is much above $50 with the specs it has. So a phone like the g1, which would be about 3x the price, will get you 3x as much phone.

I must say that looks like a very low quality phone. I am very disappointed since i was going to upgrade when this came out but i think ill just keep my original shadow now. They did not really making any eye catching improvements besides making the phone look worse then what it was (although i think the body of the original shadow is great). Besides Windows 6.1 is available on a bunch of other phones anyway.

also you can put 6.1 on the shadow 1 mike, lol

I think the first Shadow looks way better than the Shadow II.
I wouldn’t upgrade. It just doesn’t sound like much of an upgrade.
But people talking about getting a Samsung Behold… Make sure you go play with one for a little bit first. Me being a guy, I think it’s a bit of a girly phone – the colors and all on the phone and the text font… Having a Windows Mobile phone brought me into the world of thinking my phone is more than just a phone and some games.
I still don’t think I can leave Windows Mobile.

Well, at least this will make it easier to get the original shadow interface working on wm6.1 for original shadow users.
And perhaps allow us to finally get uma into other WM devices.

yeah excuse me marcus but i had to say something, what the hell are you saying the behold is a girly phone? it comes in 2 colors brown (which is decent for men) and the pink rose (which is suitable for woman), say what you want, it is a great phone , better than the shadow and hell the shadow 2, people like myself don’t buy phones because of some person’s complaint or review, we buy it for ourselves, and that is what the people who will buy the shadow 2 will do, they will buy it because they are a huge fan of the shadow series, or because they liked certain things about its specs, so yeah end of discussion

To derrick: i know you can put 6.1 on the shadow but its not a legitimate version and voids your warranty.

This device will change the the playing field with regards to unlimiteed WiFi calling capability domestically with 5 bars of coverage indoors at the office and at home. Overseas, the savings is even greater. Simultaneous voice and data over WiFi utilizing a UMA signal with no international voice or data roaming charges. Those that are unhappy with T-Mobile, leave, we won’t miss you. When the G1 version 2 with UMA is released as well as the I-Phone with UMA, you will be running back to T-Mobile after those blistering 3-4 figure roaming bills from AT&T. T-Mobile offers the most for the money of all 4 carriers and excels in customer service delivery. In time, T-Mobile’s 3G network will bypass AT&T, VW and Sprint and the perfect phone will still be as elusive as it is today. For those of you that yearn to leverage the power of UMA and enjoy WM 6.1 on EDGE, I share in your anticipation and applaud you. You are in for a real treat.

my roommate has the samsung behold and to be honest with you. I like the shadow1! better! we traded phones for a day and the only thing his phone had against mine was the 3g network. otherwise mine was faster and easier to use. I could type faster than he could and navigate through menus easier. I guess it all depends on what type of person you are. but how I see it, im getting the shadow 2 unless it doesn’t have the 3g network. then, and maybe just then, I will get the G1. as of right now. shadow1 with wm6 is everything I need in a phone. what else do I need. a touch screen keyboard, that doesn’t get the right words?! nah, I keep what I have!

After having the Shadow since March, the second iteration of it does absolutely nothing for me. Unless the second is sent back and updated with a processor with twice the speed, etc., it won’t be worth what it’s made of. I am constantly having problems with this thing not ringing, no text messages, never able to use the wi-fi or data let alone T-Mobiles mobile web. I had a friend call me 14 times a couple weeks ago to tell me he had to go to the hospital because he was throwing up blood, and until I saw the screen blinking I never knew he called, the 15th time. And to those of you who think I had it on silent or vibrate so you can jump down my throat, think again. The volume was all the way up and it is set to vibrate and the profile is on normal. Two days ago I received 1,350 text messages that I haven’t received in over three months. Since T-Mobile put up a new tower with 3g a block and a half from my house, I still don’t get all my phone calls, it rings once and when I check it there will be four or five missed calls. Unless this new Shadow 2 gets some huge improvements over what it is now, I doubt I would even buy another HTC product from T-Mobile. A Shadow 2 without a faster processor, 3G, and better connectivity would be no better than a Dash with Windows Mobile 2003, and unfortunately that is exactly what this phone looks like.

Chuck,
It sounds like you need to do a hard reset. Your problems might be because of an application or change you did to the phone. Your situation sounds very unique.
Before performing a full hard reset I suggest performing a full sync to back up your contacts, calendar and My Documents.
