Review Round Up On The G1

There are a few reviews trickling in from some big sites around the web about the G1. While there is some disparity between reviews, there is some general consensus on the overall usability of the device. Adam Z Lein at pocketnow put together a list of issues from the different reviews out there that you might find useful. The most comprehensive review is from a favorite blog of mine, Matthew Miller’s blog on ZDNet. Overall, most of the complaints are fixable, as in the dev team, a developer or one of our own forum monkeys could fix the issue.
Coming from the Shadow expect a few things to bug you slightly right off the bat:
- No Outlook Syncing…yet
- Dialing does not use full Smart Filtering
- Browser controls are inconvenient
- The Red end call button does not behave like on a Windows Mobile phone.
- No A2DP Stereo Bluetooth support…yet
- No video recording capability…at this time
- Cannot store applications on the Storage Card…at this point
- Popular document types are FUBARed right now (PDF, Office, etc) Although there is word of an Office Applicationcoming soon. Right now they are filtered through Google’s HTML conversion.
This list is not comprehensive and is only from the point of view of a Shadow owner. Does this mean the G1 is going to crash and burn like the Hindenburg? Hardly. Android has a lot going for it and many people are excited about the possibilities. Patches will be released and updates will be available OTA (Over The Air). Developers will continue pushing new applications and hackers and modders will get their hands very dirty in the code.
Our own G1 will be here very soon, so expect some videos from the AllShadow point of view on what we can do and the potential of our new toy. Meanwhile, if you have specific questions about the G1, that you can’t find an answer to, that you would like to see covered in the video please post them in the comments.

i get my the 21st delivery date is up on ups!!
GPS functionality i want to see how well it works on the phone
I played around with a non functioning unit at the local t-mob store and the first thing I noticed, this phone is not as large and bulky as all the videos and pics make it seem. The only thing I can think of is most of the people holding it have small hands. It feels solid, the slide out gives a nice heavy click like a luxury car. It feels good, it looks good, and it’s not bulky. I just wish I could have the white one instead of black, don’t get me wrong, the black looks awesome. But the white, man, just reminds me of something that would be hanging on a clone troopers belt. ![]()
I played with a functioning unit on 3G at my local store in the Sacramento Market and the GPS works very well. To Scaulen…. I felt that the slide felt a bit cheap compared to the Shadow. If you look at it slide slowly you will notice a lot of cheap plastic as part of the mechanism.
Seems that Google has giving T-mobile the ultimate power. The Android OS will have a “kill-switch” feature. Just google it. Seems that google will be able to uninstall a program on your phone without you permission or knowledge. Not a bad thing, but I think that is going a little to far, and a small invasion of privacy.
Yes I was reading this over at t-mo news and tried to write what i felt about it but since that site pretty much carries water for t-mo they wouldnt let me voice my opinion about this. So I am here to state my opinion on this. 1 I dont think they should have any kind of access to your phone or programs that is a huge invasion of pricacy. I am confident however that developers somewhere will disable any remote capabilites. Just think about it if they can get into your phone and remove a program what else can they do or SEE?
If I have to choose between google screening applications before they are realeased or periodically hacking into my phone and personal data them hmm they should prescreen things that go up on there app store. I will be here getting apps anyways because I know that this site only suggests safe apps and hacks. p.s Mike you really need to add spell check to your comment boxes for us who spell like 8 year olds lol

The one I used was straight out of the box and solid as hell. I used to work in a test lab for Zebra portable printers and there are reasons they go with plastics over metal. Weight saving, costs, they want certain pieces to break instead of others, and certain plastics are almost as strong as metals when formed right. I’ll put money that that slide away keyboard was run through at the least a 5 year life cycle in all rated environments before it was approved. Destructive testing is so much fun.
i am gonna wait a few weeks before i get this, can’t wait
This ability for them to just get into my system has me on an uproar! Seriously did George Bush get ahold of Google! This is worse than the F.I.S.A law being ignored this is the privacy of our personal papers! I am going to sell my g1 unless this is remedied! If I keep it and I find out they were in my system I will file a class action lawsuit!!
^^^ lol you’re not going to file a lawsuit, give me a break
already ordered my 8 gig battery from ebay..23.00 dollars and free shipping..no 1 gig for me man..
Kiss my ass bimbo Ill file what ever I want. If they scan your phone it violates consitiional rights - Im sure that if they do this some lawyer somewhere would love to sue google for this. your a moron.
now now everyone, can’t we all just get along? lol
So finally got my shipping info, it’ll be here on Tuesday the 21st!!! YAY!!!
Got my G1 yesterday! Amazing device. Lots of cool stuff in the Android Market.
I should get mine Monday Im super excited. But we really need this kill switch explained.
1st. Am I the only one that thinks the phone is ugly??!! Not trying to put anyone down here that likes it, I think the phone is attrocious. It seems everyone likes it. Also, have fun with that kill switch thing suckas, I’ll stick with my Shadow for now. There is absolutly no reason whatsoever a phone company should have remote access to any phone that you purchased through them. That is as terrible as OnStar being able to turn your car off…….
i dont think google cares much about the conversations we have with our boy/girlfriends, our junk mail and school/work mail, or our text messages or what we do with our phones
I GOT MINE ALREADY, AND ITS THE SHIT SUPER BADAZZ BRO EVERYONE WHO WILL GET IT WILL ENJOY HAVING IT AND EVERYTHING BECAUSE I KNOW IM HAVIN THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE WITH IT CHEA….G1 ALL THE WAY
My G1 is here and I am stoked!!!!!!!!!
just got my G1 this thing kicks ass
Any idea if the phone will be able to synch with the t-mobile contacts on the t-mobile site? I know it grabs the google contacts, but all my phone numbers are on t-mobiles site, and only some of them are on my sim chip.
