6 Innovative G1 Applications to Check Out

With October 22nd getting closer by the minute let’s take a look at some apps that might prove interesting. With all the hardware under the G1’s hood, app developers have many options to work with when creating innovative solutions and new functionality you never knew you wanted. The following are some apps from the Android Developer Challenge that either solve a problem or add value to the G1. Most of these are location aware. Go on, you know you want to keep reading…

First up is Mobeedo. There is a video on their main page that explains it quite well but basically it is an open source location aware alert system that anyone can add to. From what can be seen a user can choose what kind of alerts they want in certain areas and their own. For example, say you’re taking a trip to a new city. Input your travel itinerary (planes, trains, etc) and select what alerts you want (attractions, cafes, night clubs) and while you’re walking around doing your thing you’ll get updates about the subjects you’re interested in. You won’t miss out on that hole-in-the-wall club or that great restaurant.

SplashPlay is all about learning new instruments or getting better at the ones you already play. The demo shows a tutorial on chords for the guitar. With an app like this in your pocket you can turn any location into a practice session.

Wikitudefrom Mobilizy is one I’m really excited about. It takes advantage of nearly all the hardware the G1 offers. It pulls upon location information and uses the Camera, Accelerometer, Digital Compass and GPS to show you Wiki information overlapped on the live image you are viewing from your camera right on your screen. How cool is that?! Next time your anywhere you can fire this puppy up and learn something about your surroundings.

ShopSavvy should save you some bucks overtime. Next time you’re at the store you can pull out your G1, scan a bar code with the camera and ShopSavvy will pull up pricing information for the product you just scanned. It will let you know if there is a better deal nearby or even online. Connect instantly to reviews so you can decide if you really want it. You can even be alerted when the price hits a certain point.

Locale is a location based setting manager that lets you create situations for specific locations in which your settings will automatically change to a predetermined setting. You can tell it to silence your phone when in a meeting, a class or turn it up to full volume when you’re at the movies (because everyone loves that)

tuneWiki is your portable Karaoke machine. They don’t really hype it like that but basically it displays synchronized lyrics for the songs your listening to. Couple this with SplashPlay and you’re on your way to being a rock star!

At some point this month the Android Market will open will all kinds of shiny new applications to check out. If you haven’t ordered your G1 yet you might be wishing you did as the delivery dates are getting pushed back for people ordering after certain dates. October 22nd here we come!

SplashPlay offers synced chords & lyrics to videos, with optional hardware to attach to your guitar, piano, drums, etc, showing you the fingering patterns.

Just a shameless plug for our exciting endeavour :)

I’m looking forward to seeing the SplashPlay app on the Gphone.

About time there was a viable guitar tuition device on a mobile phone which will actually teach me how to play.

T minus 3 days and counting.
