Free Email Access on the G1?

Fortune is reporting that Google and T-Mobile may allow G1 users to get free Google email. The idea is that you’d be able to access email - and email only - and that you’d be subjected to ads in exchange for the free service. And of course, as with the Shadow, you don’t need a data plan to use WiFi.

That’s great and all, except, that you are required to order the data plan when you get a G1. So if you have the data plan, why would you care about free email?? Makes no sense unless they aren’t tell you that you can cancel the data plan without any penalty??

yeah, I just spoke with tmo, data plan right now is a must. I was on android community page, and someone had posted that you could get around that, but according to tmo you get. So what is this new news - I guess it will all wash out once we get the phones.

They SHOULD explain the disadvantage of this ‘plan’.
Sure you can check your Gmail with your G1, without paying more, but you will not be able to use Google Maps, you can not take advantage of the accelerometer, GPS, web browsing, etc.

If all you can do is check your Gmail … what good is it?
They need to re-think what this means to the consumer.

Instead of this, TMO should offer 30 Days Free of data, to customers with a small plan who bought the G1. Meaning you could use Google Maps, accelerometer, GPS, web browsing, etc.
This would show apprehensive TMO customers ‘what the big deal is’ concerning their more expensive data package.
