Desktop PC Power On Your Shadow
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out and about and remembered that I forgot to do something on my PC. Sometimes it would be as simple a task as grabbing a certain file or setting Tivo Desktop to convert some shows for me. Other times it would be something a bit more involved like grabbing a particular torrent or setting the computer to defrag. Maybe I just wanted to turn it off and limit my carbon footprint on our wonderful world. There are many solutions for controlling a home PC when away and most require some sort of over-involved witchcraft with firewalls, routers, DNS services, processes, services and your first born child. I wanted something that would just work and I found it in RDM+.
Â
RDM+ is a small program you install that sits quietly in your PC’s system tray and lets you connect from your Shadow with the Windows Mobile client. It’s as simple as that. There are many controls you can use including views to make navigation easier. There are several zoom levels including full desktop, medium and actual size so you can get around your screen easier. I have my home PC set to lock automatically so when I connect with RDM+ I need to enter my password (just a security precaution in case my Shadow falls into the hands of an ill-intentioned ninja).
After I log in I can access and do anything on my computer, and I mean anything from anywhere. I can be on the other side of the world, as long as I have a connection on my phone I can just connect and task away.
Â

All the keys on your keyboard and mouse can be mimicked from the Shadow. Through the use of modifiers and combos you can send whatever combination you desire.
You can access the start menu and click using the Center-Select on the Shadow or the 1, 2, or 3 keys to simulate the left, middle, and right mouse buttons.
If you need to send a line or block of text, simply press the 0 (zero) key on the Shadow’s keypad and you’ll be greeted by the text entry box. Type away and push send!
Â

Left something running that you want to close? The System Manager will let you get to the tools you need. You can Close, Kill, Restart, send console commands and more.
Want to mess around with some files? There’s an easy to use File Manager that even lets you upload or download files from your home PC.
In the last month that I’ve been using RDM+ it has saved me a lot of time and heartache. I used it on more than one occasion to start a video converter, download torrents, restart the computer, and to simply check to make sure everything was alright. If you ever have a need to access your PC at home while away or want the ability just in case then you should check out RDM+ Remote Desktop for Smartphones. RDM+ is available in our store and comes in English, German and Japanese. There is a 7-day free trial available so you can decide before you buy. The cost is a one-time $44.95.
Overall, I give it 4.5 out of 5 Shadows. It’s a great program, works like it should and has lots of extras. It will get a perfect score when it has audio support.
