A Beginner’s Guide to the G1
We know you love your Shadow but since the G1 is still in the nursery and not ready to take home we are going to tell you a little bit more about this baby. There is still much love for the Shadow and more great how-to’s and tutorials on the way as well as some pretty cool software we’ve found so stay tuned.
The manual for the G1 is now available. We’re hosting a local copy so it doesn’t disappear. Below are some highlights about the basic functions and buttons that you might care to know about. So keep reading…
G1 Videos from HTC
This is the made for TV video that pokes a lot of fun at the iPhone ads.

Highlights from the Manual
An opened view of the G1 with some keyboard keys, SD card slot cover and USB port labeled.
This figure introduces some major screen icons and features.
A quick guide to the notifications
MORE notifications. I think they covered just about everything with these except to tell you the dog needs walking.
Contacts screen and functions. Ooooh Online status, NEAT!
Typing tips! Looks like we get some copy and paste action.
A view of the simplistic media player. No word on if it is skinnable yet.
If you want to know more in depth information about the usual smart phone functions on the G1 download the PDF manual and have a cup of Joe. Most of the functions you are used to exist (except video recording and Bluetooth stereo, but that should change soon). There are other functions that involve the GPS, Google Maps/Talk/Gmail, YouTube video player and other apps that we will go into more detail about once we get one in hand. Hopefully this short beginner’s guide gives you a better idea of the G1. Stay tuned for when we get the G1 and give you the AllShadow insight that you know and love.

wow this looks really nice. i want it so bad. however i will wait till later on being that this android software is brand new and we all know that the first production models for brand new os software are always buggy

I really see no point in waiting because we know the hardware is good, since its made by htc, and since android is open then you should be able to update when a newer version comes out instead of just buying another phone like windows mobile makes you do.

i just got my phone in my name in about april of this year and i am eligable for the 179 upgrade price. So you might be able to do Derrick, just go to the t-mobile.com site and log in and try, it’ll tell you your upgrade price right then

ok thanks

i thought the $179 price was just to make sure you get one, and then pay the remaining balance once you receive the G1?
The price of $179 IS ONLY FOR NEW CUSTOMERS!
If you already have T-Mobile, you pay $299 + taxes/fees.
Actually, $179 is also for T-Mobile customers, if you’re out of contract. Luckily, I have a family plan and one of the phones is out of contract, so I just signed in to tmobile.com under that number and I ordered a black G1 for $179. Score! I read on another site that they might already be sold out, so it doesn’t make any difference if you were trying to decide, you don’t have a choice anymore, there won’t be any to buy.

Here’s the link, although people in the comments said they were still able to order, so maybe you’re in luck if you still want one, but I wouldn’t wait.

i have to pay $341.85 if i wanted to preorder it, i don’t have the money tho, so i have to wait, i wonder how much it will be after the preorder offer if finished

the best way to find put how much you’ll have to pay for the phone is to try to pre-order it (you don’t have to complete the sale). NEW customers are NOT eligible for the presale, only postpaid customers that have not upgraded recently. you do not have to be put of contract, you can be within 2 months of finishing a 2 year or one month of finishing a one year and get the same pricing. after the presale, the pricing should still be the same. Hec, the price is the price you see on the screen; it is not an introductory price and it is not a partial price, with the rest to be paid later. it is just that price. that’s it. happy shopping!

FYI… Even if you’re in a non-3G area, you can still pre-order the G1. I did. Of course other restrictions apply, such as being up-to-date on your balance due, etc.

Actually, trappertam, you can order the phone even if you are not eligible for an upgrade. My daughter just upgraded in May or June and we got the $299. price for the phone. They are also still available, I know someone that just ordered one yesterday, the Brown.
So if you want one, you can still get it.

some thing has been bothering me during the press realse of the G1 the presenters made it sound as if they will only give the open source material to programers that call them as ask for it as if they are going to make people sell what ever product they make on the product site. that would suck considering wen i think of open source i think of free apps! idk if thats what they plan to do but does anyone have any info on that.
