Memory Management: Finding That Extra Space

Posted by Mike Benton on July 11th, 2008

The fact is that not everyone can have the biggest storage card. That’s why it’s important to manage what you have. Here are a few tips for some commonly used programs you can use to reclaim some of the space on your device. If are badly in need of some real estate on your Smartphone then keep reading…

Google Maps: Without some registry tweaking to tell Google Maps to use the storage card you will have to manually reset Google Maps every so often. Depending on how often you use it makes a difference. If you use it every few weeks or so I wouldn’t worry about resetting it save for every few months. To do so open up Google Maps > Menu > Options > Reset Google Maps > Reset.

Live Search: Luckily if you have a storage card (which you should by now) you can tell Live Search to cache to the Storage Card. Unfortunately it only gives three sizes. I go for 32MB (the lowest) and don’t see any difference in performance. This is mostly for the map images. To mess with the cache settings open up Live Search > Menu > Settings > Check ‘Cache to Storage Card’ if it isn’t. You can change the cache size below the checkbox.

Internet Explorer: Like any web browser this can be a beast, especially if you do a lot of mobile surfing. To clear the cache in Pocket Internet Explorer open it up and go to Menu > Tools > Options > Memory and press clear for Temporary Files then Yes. It might take awhile for it to perform some housekeeping so don’t freak out if it doesn’t respond right away. Personally I like to leave Cookies and History as it makes the mobile experience more enjoyable to not have to log back into every site again.

Camera: It is best to save Pictures and Videos to the Storage Card as they can take up large amounts of memory quickly. The Camera app should automatically recognize a new Storage Card. To be sure, press the Camera button > Left Soft Key for Menu > then the Right Soft Key for Settings > press Right once to go to the Capture Settings Tab and then Select Storage. If it isn’t selected already select Storage Card by highlighting it and pressing the Center-Select button on your Shadow. Your Pictures and Video will now be stored on your Storage Card in the DCIM\100MEDIA folder. The storage folder can be changed by messing with the Registry, if you feel like tinkering search the forums for how to change that setting.

It is difficult for this list to be all inclusive due to the high number of third party software available for Windows Mobile. However if you feel there is an essential tip missing for a frequently used application let everyone know in the comments.

Enjoy!
