Get AIM on Your Phone, Free
If you’ve been around the Windows Mobile world for a while, you know that AOL used to put out a client for AIM that was decent but not great, and they neglected to update it.
A few years later, it looks like AOL is getting really serious about AIM on mobile devices. Currently AIM for Windows Mobile (the new version) is in beta, but I’ve found it to be quite stable, and impressive. You can get the download link texted to your phone from AOL, or, if you’re like me and don’t like giving out your phone number to third parties, download the CAB from here.

I think that AOL’s prerogative for the new AIM for Mobile was to make the experience much like the newest version of AIM on the desktop (version 6 and above), and they’ve succeeded. Above we can see a shot of my buddy list. Like AIM desktop, it shows you the current status of each buddy next to their screen name. Plus, when you’re in your buddy list, you can get a view of current IM conversations off to the left. When a new message arrives, you get an indicator over the persons button icon. This all makes it easy to carry on multiple conversations at once. Neat.

Then, during an IM conversation, you can quickly shoot back to your buddy list with the left soft key, or enter the Menu where you can change settings. The settings menu looks very similar to what you’ll find on the desktop and gives you quite a bit of control over the behavior of AIM for mobile - including sound, skin, block, and sign on options.
I give AIM for Windows Mobile 5/5 Shadows - it’s free (for now), and does a fantastic job at bringing AIM to your Shadow.

Plus it works on the 5.99 T-zone hack which is even better.
Haha! I like how your buddy list is broken down into boys and girls.
=D - My buddy list set up has been unchanged since high school.
This is very cool but you have to be connected to wifi to sign on.
just installed it and gave it a try.. it’s pretty awesome.. looks slick and the enhanced animations are cool too..
it’s too bad i’ve already got Palringo running at start up ![]()
Its giving me an error thats says, ” Authentication server error 12002″ so i can’t sign whats the problem?
Russel. Which do you like better Palringo or AIM Mobile?
Hey Irv.. The problem is that you have to be connected to the internet. Try turning on wifi and you should be able to sign in.
thanks but with that i need more help…its say wi-fi available however it doesn’t connect, i believe i need network key but idk how to obtain it. any help?
@SJSMR2
aim mobile seems to be working just fine for me.. it’s definitely got a good grasp at the desktop version of aim.. it’s pretty, and it’s slick..
as for palringo.. i like it simply because i can sign onto aim, msn, yahoo and googletalk.. it’s also streamlined and the tabbed conversations is good too.. if you havent used it, i highly recommend it.. just use the search at the top of the page.. ![]()
I use Palringo. Just was curious if AIM mobile was worth a try. I also like signing on to multiple IM programs at once. I think I am going to just stick with Palringo
do you have to use wi-fi to get this to work. i have the 5.99 plan and i get the authentication sever error message when i try to sign on.
just tried it with wi-fi and got the same message.
I am also getting “Authentication server error 12081″ even when using Wi-fi
This is hard to believe, AIM Mobile free?
I’m okay with the data connection.
But do you need to pay for the messaging costs?
i don’t know if anyone else is getting this but, AIM mobile is making my phone alot slower, and is making way more errors. Sometimes it just freezes up and I can’t do anything.
So will this use my texts? I don’t have unlimited so I don’t use the Aim that is already on the phone.
i kno this mite seem to be a really stupid question and all but how do i actually get the im i keep going on the menu and can’t find it i see the little message but then what
can you change your buddy icon and how
