There’s a problem with most Note programs, they just aren’t accessible enough and they usually cost money. There are several different solutions to having weather on the home screen, some for the NEO home screen and many for the standard Windows Mobile home screen. WorldMate Live takes it a step further by throwing in one click access to your itinerary, travel tools, weather and more, all for free. Triniti wrote in to let us know that the MySpace Widget for Yahoo Go 3.0 that we wrote about is back up. When we originally covered the story it promptly disappeared and many people were disappointed. Alas, Yahoo has come through for us and brought it back up! You will need to install Yahoo Go 3.0. Once you have it installed, loaded, and are logged in with your Yahoo ID go to the Widgets icon on the Carousel. From there you should see the MySpace icon in the Editors picks or you can search for it in the Search box.

T-Mobile has released an update to the HotSpot login utility. This is important to have if you login at Starbucks locations using the HotSpot service.

• For Shadow and Dash users install the TMO_Shadow_Dash_HotSpotUpdate.cab
• For Wing users you can install the TMO_Wing_HotSpotUpdate.cab

You will need to restart your device after installation.

Note:
As far as I can tell these updates haven’t been rolled into the Shadow Upgrade Software posted several months ago. So if you perform a Hard Reset you will have to reinstall this.

Edit: The Shadow will fit in the case with BOTH of the Extended Batteries.

First off, if you haven’t bought a Shadow yet make sure you get one in the White Packaging. It has two batteries in it. The standard OEM battery that everyone else has and the new Extended OEM battery.

Okay now for more battery goodness… Starting on Monday, T-Mobile customers can call into Customer Care and order a new Extended Battery (thanks tmonews.com). Supposedly it’s free of charge, which would be a gesture towards customers.

Here is the battery lineup. Starting at the left we have the standard OEM battery with 920mah. In the middle, the new Extended OEM battery from HTC, with a much healthier 1350mah. Many of you have already discovered Viigo and have been using it for awhile now. You might be interested to know that Viigo’s beta Tango is available for Windows Mobile. It has many improvements over the current stable Version of Viigo. Among the many enhancements are Podcasts, Weather, Sports, Entertainment and Finance. Travel and Local Interest channels will be coming in the next couple of weeks.

What I have been looking forward to in the next version of Viigo are the channels, especially Audio and Podcasts. While it works like it’s supposed to I am a bit disappointed that the audio files don’t download automatically and that I can’t specify how many of them to download (or they do and I can’t get it to work). I prefer my large files to download while I am sleeping and my device is plugged in. Additionally, there still isn’t a web reader interface for the feeds similar to Google Reader.

However! There is a web feed management interface available at myviigo.com where you can add a couple feeds at a time or make the switch from other RSS readers (while you’re at it, add ours!). Viigo is a solid application and your feeds will download when they’re supposed to. One thing that makes Viigo a top level app is the continuous development. The masterminds over at Viigo see an opportunity and are constantly innovating.

Okay good news and more good news First the good news, I tested this out on Vista and it worked great. Now the more good news is it also works on XP. If you remember we posted about DVD Catalyst 3 awhile back and gave it a high rating. DVD Catalyst Free is not DVD Catalyst 3 but it comes from the same people, which means it should work but if it doesn’t don’t let that reflect on DVD Catalyst 3 until you try both.

A word of advice, don’t insert the DVD until you have opened DVD Catalyst Free and selected Windows Mobile from the drop down menu. Also you might need TCPMP on your Shadow to play the movie. If the file size looks a bit big for you just grab that white slider at the bottom and move it until you’re happy.

The Shadow’s battery life could be a bit better, which makes us glad that T-Mobile is using a bigger battery for the Shadow II. What if there way that you could get better battery life in 5 minutes just by installing a CAB file?

Well, this may be the case. dom2686 from the forums has posted a registry-tweaking CAB (that came from XDA-Devs) which he claims has increased his battery life by 3 hours. Not bad. The CAB contains several registry tweaks that changes the power management of the phone. As with any registry tweak, be sure to backup your phone before installing.

Those in the thread are reporting no ill-effects from installing the CAB, and most are indeed finding their battery life to be better, some even finding there to be a “significant increase.” There are some, though, citing that they see no improvement, or even worse battery life, in which case they were able to uninstall it with the registry changes reverted. Whether this works is probably determined by what other tweaks you have made to your Shadow (overclocks, programs installed, other registry tweaks made, etc).

To download the battery-saving CAB, click here. As with any CAB file, download the file to your computer and transfer it to your phone. Then, run the CAB from the phone. Let us know if you see a difference!

Thanks to Joe for bringing this one up. For all of you that would enjoy having NES on your Shadow or other Windows Mobile device, prepare to be thrilled. You can be up and running your favorite game in no time. Just follow these instructions.

1. On your Shadow go to mobile.surrealnetworks.com
2. Click on Applications for Dash
3. Scroll down to Pocket Nester Plus and download it
4. Run the cab file if it doesn’t automatically
5. Go to Start > PocketNesterPlus > Options > Controllers > and assign the keys to your liking. Don’t forget to assign a key to Menu
6. Go back to Internet Explorer, from the same page you downloaded PNP from is a link (in the same paragraph) that lists a directory of NES roms/games.
7. Download the game you want and start playing!
8. The mega packs don’t work so we’re creating one for you. Should be up in the within a day.

Kcjxvolley asked if there was a MySpace app for Windows Mobile that would work on the Shadow. Yes there is, in an indirect way. Most of you have probably found the link for mobile MySpace and Facebook here. However there is a better interface available. You will need Yahoo Go 3.0 first, which is a hefty little download in and of itself.

After downloading and installing Yahoo Go 3.0, go to beta.m.yahoo.com on your Shadow and in the upright corner select the Widget icon (it looks like some gears). You will need to login to get everything working correctly. Once logged in, select ‘Yahoo Gallery Widget’ on the next page you can search for it by name.

Edit: Apparently it’s gone fully missing… It was there and then POOF! If anyone is able to find it let us know.

In my opinion, Snap2Face is the better of the two applications that I took a look at for Facebook apps for the Shadow as it uses its own interface. Additionally, it gives several handy options like being able to SYNC your Facebook contacts with your Outlook contacts/address book, and setting your Cache folder to the Storage Card. You can get updates, check your inbox, poke friends, write on other’s walls and pretty much every major action you would want to do on Facebook from Snap2Face. I think the layout can be improved upon a bit and the soft keys used more effectively. You can get started by going to http://www.magnifoca.com/download_snap2face.html

The other is FriendMobilizer from FaceOfMobile. I don’t really care for this as it is basically (with apologies to the developer) an ad driven Internet Explorer wrapper. It has a badly placed Exit function and since it wraps the mobile Facebook page, pressing the Back key on the Shadow when in a text field will exit the application instead of backing over the previous character like any other application. Because it pulls down webpages instead of just Facebook data the speed is much slower than Snap2Face. The features weren’t better than actually visiting Facebook’s mobile page so I didn’t keep this one installed. If you want to check it out go to FaceOfMobile.com
