New Live Search: Better Than Before

Posted by Mike Benton on May 15th, 2008

How much better? Well that’s for you to decide. They have implemented some bug fixes and incorporated some new features. Read more for pictures and descriptions of these new treats.

Collections

First up is the new Collections feature. Think of it as an enhanced RSS reader. It basically involves your location into the process. See that entry for Upcoming Events and HomeThinking: Recent Home Sales? Those are searched for by your entered location and results displayed. It isn’t exactly Google Real Estate Search but it’s sort of neat. Interestingly enough, Flickr is included. Go figure Yahoo fans J

Finding RSS feeds isn’t as nice as it should be but when entering AllShadow.com’s feed be sure to use the http:// otherwise it might have a conniption. In case you were wondering it is http://feeds.feedburner.com/allshadow if you want to add the feed to your browser just click the RSS icon up right.

Some more views of the Collections service.

In case you were wondering what the SMS to a Friend screen looked like. Fairly simple and to the point.

Web

Boring actually, not even worth taking a screen shot of. It takes you straight to Pocket Internet Explorer and on the mobile version of Live.com

Weather

Basic, but do we really need seismographs? Okay maybe live radar on a mobile device for free would be awesome but we don’t get that yet. The More Weather Info takes you Pocket Internet Explorer again. What does Microsoft spend their money on anyways?

Overall, I like the addition of Weather and Collections. The ongoing battle of RSS readers has been slow in changes but I’m still yearning for a client side app that operates almost exactly like Google Reader’s interoperability between mobile and desktop browsers plus the ability to star items for viewing on a larger screen. Weather is nice to know if you are anywhere but the Phoenix Area (Sunny all the time except Monsoon season anyone?).

I want to be clear about something though. I like Live Search a lot better than Yahoo’s monstrosity Yahoo Go 2.0/3.0 which takes way too long to start up and never gets my most current email (it’s just eye candy). Plus! Live Search has a smaller footprint on my device. Stomp that!
