How to Change the “Waiting” Cursor

Posted by Brandon Miniman on April 23rd, 2008

This is a fun little hack, but here is a caution: if you don’t consider yourself an intermediate or advanced user, don’t attempt this. It’s not the easiest.

Thanks to a post in the forum started by theDante, we now have a way to change the “waiting” cursor to any animation of our choice. Right now I have the Windows Vista blue spinner in the place of the boring circular thing, and it’s added a bit of charm to my phone.

Here are the steps that I have found to work for me…

1. Download the file to your desktop this website

2. Extract the file to a folder on your desktop

3. Connect your Shadow and explore the device via My Computer

4. Drop the CAB file inside of My Documents on the Shadow, or some other directory that you’ll remember

5. Open File Explorer on your Shadow, and execute the CAB. Save it to main memory, not storage card

6. Reset your device

7. If you don’t already see the changed cursor when you open a program that usually displays the cursor (the default is a bouncing penguin), proceed to step 8…

8. Go to Start, Programs, and find the MWC Folder

9. Open the MWC program at the top, and test to see if the cursor has changed. If not, proceed to step 10…

10. Run MWCUnload, then run MWCReload. If the cursor STILL hasn’t changed, you’re on your own :). Try resetting your device again, and opening those programs again, and resetting some more. You should get it eventually.

Now, assuming that you’ve got it to work, you may want to change your cursor. There are several more included in the program, or you can dig up more from the forum post (like the Vista one). This is how you do it.

1. On the Shadow, go to Program Files/Marshall WaitCursor, and drop the icon folder in with the other ones

2. Using a registry editor, go to HKLM\Software\Marshall\MarshallWaitCursor and edit the CurrentSkin value and change it the name of the folder of the icon you want to use.

3. On the Shadow, run the MWCUnload program. Then run the MWCReload program. It should work.

um ok i installed the cursor.cab then restarted phone and keep getting “ERROR INJECTING THE DLL” would u happen to know how to fix this error?

Yeah, I got that too at first. What I did was uninstalled the program, reset the phone, installed program, reset phone, then loaded MWCReload, and it worked.

Told you it wasn’t easy! It’s a buggy program, and the guy that makes it doesn’t seem to support it any longer.
