Video: The vTap Method for Watching Online Video

Posted by Mike Benton on April 1st, 2008

vTap is a standalone application that you simply install on your Shadow and it just works. The service draws from many online video sites. You can scroll through a listing of video results and read the short synopsis for each video. Selecting play will begin downloading the video. Once enough of it is downloaded you can begin playing or it will automatically play once the download is complete.

I have tested this over Wifi and EDGE and it works just fine. There are several settings available such as Audio Only (for those that just want to listen) as well as different video quality levels. One draw back is it automatically switches the input method to ABC. For those that prefer XT9 you have to switch it back in another application by holding down the * key.

Watch the video above and then point Pocket Internet Explorer to http://www.vtap.com to install it.

 Enjoy!

Does anyone know if you can use this with the $5.99 T-zones?

Look on their site in the FAQ there is something addressing that specifically

ok well I think it’s cool, and I really like it. but the video quality and audio quality are crap! how do I fix the crapness of everything?

  • Benji said:

yes it does work on the 5.99 T-Zones internet, the audio only option loads pretty quickly and is stream-like , but the video takes time, and even when it has finished loading it loads again after about 1:20 of video…and it repeats. although if your really patient and dont mind waiting 10 minutes after it loads you will be able to watch it without interruptions. this is for T-ZONES ONLY. it loads and plays fine over wifi. if you want better audio and video there is a “better audio” option and a “high quality” video option if you dont like its default settings. im on my phone so I haven’t seen the video mike posted so I apologies if I have repeated anything he said.

    Hello,
I actually work for Veveo Inc. who provide the vTap service. I have a few answers for the above comments.

1 - The reason for the change of the input mode to Alpha from T9 is because of the keymap on that phone. It is not the standard numeric/alpha mapping (2 = ABC). We do have a method for using numeric input, but it currently will not work properly with that keypad. We are for sure looking into adding the support for this key layout. Check back frequently at vTap.com for updates!
2 - As for the video quality we do have the ability to increase the video quality within the client by going Tools/Options/Media Quality - Here you can change to High quality. Note that this will require higher bandwidth on your network so if you are are a GPRS network, you may see more buffering when you switch to HIGH quality.

    I hope this helps!

help ever since I downloaded this program my t9 has stopped working on everything

  • Keith said:

nevermind! t9 problem solved. it would help if I read everything before I downloaded it

    Hi Aalvino,

Thanks for the update. It will be considered near perfect in my book once the input method is changed. For now though I am so used to our 20 key that it throws me for a loop everytime.

Good work and keep it up!
