This should have been posted a long time ago but for some reason I just didn’t see that this was the reason it worked. In Google Maps for Window Mobile there is a feature called ‘My Location.’ It uses cell tower triangulation to basically zero in on your location within a certain range of error. This can be helpful when leaving the airport in a new city or if you are prone to waking up in strange places. It operates similarly to Navizon. In order for that to work you need to App unlock your phone before installing Google Maps.
There are two ways to do this. The first is to create a new DWORD entry in your registery under HKLM > Security > Policies > Policies with a value of 0000101b and DWORD = 1. Thanks to SurrealNetworks
If you don’t know what I just said then simply download and install the SurrealNetworks App Unlock

haha you marked right near my house!

This is more accurate than navizon on the cell triangulation. Google is about a block away, Navizon was a 1/2 mile off.

Awesome. I used the download version and worked fine for me. Where was this feature when I was visiting NYC for the first time? Would have definitely come in handy. Great feature and can’t wait to travel somewhere new again so I can use it. =)

Cool! I am glad to see that my posts on the other topic got this out there for other people. I have enjoyed my Shadow and I enjoy this site as well. I am glad to see all of the actually helpful people that are around this site.

I have also noticed that sometimes it will give no location or the wrong location until I place a call. Then it is correct. It seems (at least for me), that it uses the location of your last phone/data call. If you haven’t used either for a while, it may show you the wrong location or none at all. I’ll call the local time and temp, then my location is updated.

It is not a virus. I have used both methods and both programs several times. If your screen is white simply take out your battery for about 10 seconds then replace it. Should work. If not then it might be something else you installed recently

For some reason, this isn’t doing anything about locating my location. Keeps saying its unavailable…Boooo

I tried everything to bring my phone back to life including removing battery, memory card, sim card, nothing worked. I had to hard reset the phone completely using the hardware buttons which wiped everything out. I felt lucky to even have that option work.

March 14th, 2008 at 9:55 am

If you installed the app unlock and THEN Google Maps and have some kind of data plan (or wifi on and connected) and have that option enabled in Google Maps then this should work.
If it doesn’t then take a look at what other programs you have running at the same time. Take another look at what other hacks you may have done that just might be interfering with this.
Chrus, when you say it keeps scrolling is this ONLY happening in Google Maps?

When I downloaded Google Maps it already had “my location” installed with the program. I went into the reg. editor to do the change and it was already there. Very cool feature, none the less. I am impressed with the satalite view of my house. Zooms in enough to have an excellent view of my car in the driveway and my trash can at the curb on garbage day.

this is sweet the only con i think of is that it shows my location being like a half mile away

[...] We’ve talked about Google Maps before, but it needs mentioning again. Between the included Live Search w/ Voice and Google Maps it is hard to decide which is better however Google Maps is used everyday never the less. Since it doesn’t come preloaded I have included it here as an essential freeware. The directions are the same top notch directions available through the desktop browser Google Maps and the My Location feature is awesome for those without GPS. You can get Google Maps from m.google.com or read more about it in our article about the simulated GPS ‘My Location’. [...]

This hack, bricked my phone. It caused it to get stuck on the Shadow screen, then ultimately the “Stick Together” screen. This was a brand new phone, with noting else installed…

my phone just says unable to perform this operation when trying to edit the registry. ?????
June 2nd, 2008 at 6:05 am
The “hack” is completely safe and won’t “brick” your phone. It merely enters 2 or 3 registry edits that affect application security restrictions. I’m happy to hear it has worked out so well for many others!
