More Easter Eggs

I found an entry in the Registry that referred to the site tmoanimals.com, being the curious being I am I followed the link on my PC. It turns out to be a Flash T-Mobile Animals generating that you can use to get animals icons for your Shadow (or other MyFaves phones), by just describing your friend with the slider. Unfortunately, the option to send the icon to your phone doesn’t work. The site redirects to animals.tmoplay.com and the whois entry shows that the domain is registered to someone other than T-Mobile’s parent company.  The main site tmoplay.com has a mysterious login and nothing else. The mystery deepens!

In order to get the icons on your phone you will need to be a little creative and use the screen shot capability on your computer and do some image editing/transferring.

 Enjoy

Grid View vs List View

If you have ever found the Start Menu’s Grid View to be a bit tedious and are looking for a change there is another option. Thanks to boozie in the forums here is a way to change from Grid View to List View. This is for advanced users or anyone willing to hard reset their Shadow (Meaning you will lost everything, editing the registry can have undesired consequences). You will need a registry editor like PHM Registry Editor or Total Commander, which are both free.

Basically, to make the change, open up your registry editor and navigate to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu and change the GridView value to 0. You might need to navigate to it by going to HKCU > Software > Microsoft > Shell > StartMenu > GridView. If you decide you don’t like List View you can always change it back by changing the setting from 0 to 1. If you don’t see results immediately, turn your Shadow off and back on. Even if you don’t have Viigo already you should know there is a newer version available for Windows Mobile with improved performance and features. Viigo is a splendid and free RSS reader that runs on the Shadow. Now you can get updates from all your favorite sites including your favorite AllShadow.com feed in a quick easy to access manner. One thing I noticed that was slightly odd was during installation it asks to download a newer version of Compact .Net Framework. I pressed Yes to begin the download but had to cancel the download for some reason but Viigo still worked just fine. Has anyone else experienced this?

If you have contacts stored on your SIM card and have transferred them to your Shadow, then you have probably noticed that you are seeing double in your Contacts.

Thanks to clow, here is a tip to turn off viewing SIM contacts.

Go to Start > Settings > Phone > Call Options and then uncheck the “Show SIM Contacts” box.

Voila! No more seeing double. Thanks clow!

Here’s How to Have Smoother Video

Posted by Mike Benton on January 5th, 2008

This post is a follow on to the post about watching “How to Watch Online Video“. Many of you have discovered that TCPMP is great for watching almost all video on the Shadow. One thing I noticed about TCPMP, as wonderful as it is, is the occasional jumpiness and laggy video. After messing with the settings I have found some that work really well.

From the main video screen press Options > Buffering > and double the number in the Normal Buffer Size field. Press Ok

Back at the main video screen again press Options > Video > Video Driver and Select ‘GDI’. Back at your main screen start the video and you should notice a huge improvement while playing your downloaded videos. Enjoy!

Yet Another Way to Listen to FM Radio

Posted by Mike Benton on January 4th, 2008

streamcenter.jpg

Brian tells us of yet another way to listen to your favorite FM radio stations from your Shadow. This time it is application free and just requires you have some sort of internet connection. So get your headphones ready and head over to http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda or the even shorter url tuned.mobi for some internation fair. You can search by station name or callsign or by state. The quality is as good as the stream and it doesn’t get much better than this if you yearn for your local music. Thanks Brian!

Who Else Wants to Listen to Radio on the Shadow?

Posted by Mike Benton on January 3rd, 2008

There are a few different ways to do it and using one of several applications makes it an enjoyable experience. Two applications of note, Mundu and Live365, both offer free listening. I have played with them both and here is a synopsis.

Mundu

mundu.jpg

Completely free, you do need to register on their site for it to work though. The sound quality isn’t that great but it also depends on the quality of the stream. For some reason Mundu doesn’t play in stereo through any of my BT headsets. The channel list can updated daily so there is always fresh content. Download Mundu here.

Live365

live365.jpg

The cream of the crop so to speak. The sound quality is great, impressive almost. It has a good selection of free stations as well as a 15 day VIP pass for the huge selection of premium stations. VIP sounds expensive but it isn’t. There are 3 packages to choose from depending on how you want to be billed. The lowest is $4.95 a month but you pay $118.80 once every 24 months, $6.95 a month billed at $41.70 every 6 months, or $7.95 billed at 23.85 every 3 months. Download Live365 and check out the VIP pass before you buy, or go to http://www.live365.com/mobile from your Shadow to install it OTA (Over The Air).
