Try the Shadow Before You Buy

Posted by Brandon Miniman on January 31st, 2008

If you’re still undecided about the Shadow and wish you could use one at home, head on over to TryPhone where they’ve posted an interesting emulator of the Shadow. I’ve found the emulator to be very accurate - there are some program options you can’t access, but most things are correct.

Problems with Online Video Bundle

Posted by Mike Benton on January 30th, 2008

Many people have been asking about the Youtube swf arg’s not found error that has been popping up for those of you using the FlashVideoBundle method of watching online video. It appears that Youtube changed some code on their page. Hopefully soon the FlashVideoBundle code will be updated and we will be happily back to watching our favorite Youtube videos on our Shadow Smartphones.

As soon as this happens we will provide an update here with a new video for the walkthrough.

New Home Screen Status Bar

Posted by Mike Benton on January 29th, 2008

Rinku, a fine upstanding member of the Shadow community, has developed a beautiful plugin for the Shadow Home Screen. Instead of the monochromatic icons in the top of your screen, you can look at wonderfully colored icons. So far they are only visible from the Home Screen but Rinku is working on it.

To learn how you too can partake in these colored wonders check out this thread in the forums.

If you want to skip right to the main course Freddy Reyes created a .cab file that allows you to just install the needed files so you don’t have to hunt for them. You can get that at his site listed in the forum thread (You do need to register on Reyes’ site to download). You will still need to read the thread and change some files yourself, but there is satisfaction to be gained from getting your hands dirty.

A Better Browser Cometh?

Posted by Mike Benton on January 28th, 2008

I know you don’t like Pocket Internet Explorer and more than likely you have tried Opera Mini or Opera Mobile, and perhaps you are even waiting for FireFox Mobile to come out. I’ve tried many a different browser on the Shadow and other Windows Mobile phones and haven’t found the perfect experience, yet. Until I heard about Skyfire you would be hard pressed to get me excited about browsing the internet from a phone.

Supposedly, with Skyfire, you can view ANY online video or Web 2.0 site. Now that’s something to get out of bed for. It is in private Beta now with the US beta expanding soon. There is a sign up available on their site. So head over to Skyfire.com and get signed up. As soon as it comes out we’ll do a little piece on it for those of you that just want to read AllShadow.com :)

If You Like Online Videos Check This Out

Posted by Mike Benton on January 28th, 2008

Watching video on your Shadow Smartphone helps pass a lot of time. There are various applications and methods available and this application is highly favored by many in the forums, the interface is a lot cleaner than the other method of watching online videos. Plus it has the ability to search for related content and even bookmark your favorites. The sites it draws from aren’t as numerous as our other method but it is very user friendly.

Point your mobile browser to www.vtap.com and enjoy yourself. As with any online video it helps to have a WiFi connection (home/work/school)

We’re Back!

Posted by Brandon Miniman on January 26th, 2008

Sorry about that, guys.  A hardware malfunction caused our server to severely misbehave.  But we seem to be back in working order right now.  If you see something that doesn’t work quite right, post it in the comments here.  Thanks for your patience over the last two days as we worked to fix the problem.

Ask Mike!

Posted by Mike Benton on January 24th, 2008

We just added a new page so members of the T-Mobile Shadow community can ask questions and let us know about new discoveries related to the Shadow. So if you know of any Windows Mobile Standard/Smartphone related news that you would like others to know about feel free to let us know in Ask Mike! (also linked to in the menu on the right)

Who Else Needs Some Variety?

Posted by Mike Benton on January 23rd, 2008

You are not alone, one of the great features about Windows Mobile Standard/Smartphones like the T-Mobile Shadow is the ability to modify and customise just about any aspect of it. Themes are one of the easier ways to do this. If you find yourself bored with the Neo interface there is always the standard Windows Mobile interface. There are hundreds of themes available out there and the possibilities are endless.

If you need a good reference to start customising your Shadow head over to this thread in our forums. Enjoy!

Turn your Smartphone into a Webcam

Posted by Mike Benton on January 22nd, 2008

Yes, you heard right, Ateksoft has released a new version of WebCamera Plus. You can use it as a webcam through ActiveSync/WMDC, bluetooth and even Wifi! Additionally, it uses the microphone on the Shadow as well!

When I first read about the Wifi ability I was very excited. I couldn’t wait to download and try it out myself. There aren’t many hangups when getting it running. Once setup, it works great. It is really cool to be able to run around the house untethered. Stay tuned for a full setup walkthrough on getting it running.

Highlights from their page:

- Transforms your PDA or Smartphone to high-resolution web-camera.
- NEW!! Use your PDA/Smartphone as microphone!
Even through Wi-Fi!
- Can work through any connection: USB ActiveSync, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, 3G, LAN.
- Compatible with almost all modern Smartphones and PDAs.
- Can be used as web-camera in many programs: Skype, MSN Messager, Yahoo Messager, Virtual Dub and many others.
- Can capture device screen and transmit video to Desktop PC.

You can get it here.

Controlling your Vista computer from the Shadow

Posted by Mike Benton on January 21st, 2008

It is still in Beta but Ikanos Consulting is working on a very useful piece of software that literally turns your Shadow (smartphone, pocket pc phone, windows mobile phone) into a SideShow device for Windows Vista. SideShow has been one of the most ignored features of Vista mostly due to the fact that there aren’t many devices that can act as a SideShow device. Why Microsoft hasn’t written the software enabling a Windows Mobile device to act as a SideShow device is beyond me. However it isn’t beyond Ikanos to write the software.

While there aren’t many SideShow gadgets at the time of this writing, I can see many more useful gadgets being written once this software goes on sale. I was lucky enough to get a preview of Go Gadgets by Ikanos Consulting and I was just simply impressed at how easy it was to use. Using my phone I can control many things on my Vista computer including Windows Media Player, Email and the Calendar.

My copy is for testing purposes only so don’t ask for mine :)

Not exactly eye candy but useful candy at this point. Very neat to be able to read email from the desktop pc.

How to Remove the ToggleView app

Posted by Mike Benton on January 21st, 2008

Other than a bump on the head training was a lot of fun. It is good to be back with the Shadow community though and I can see that everyone has been real busy. There are a few hundred comments for me to go through as well as thousands of posts in the forums to check on.

activesyncremovetoggleview.jpg

First things first. A few people seem to be having trouble with the ToggleView app I posted about. On most Shadows it seems to work fine but causes problems on others, to remain on the safe side most people would like to just uninstall it. However it doesn’t seem to be listed on the Remove Programs list on the Shadow. If you have a computer with ActiveSync you can remove it through that. Simply connect the Shadow to the computer (in guest mode if you have to) and on ActiveSync go to Tools > Add Remove Programs and scroll down to ‘greatbal’ toggleview and uncheck the box, press Ok. ActiveSync should remove it for you.

This method will also work for adding or removing other applications for those of you that prefer some more options in controlling your Shadow.

Remember, if you have questions you can always ask in the forums. You will get some great responses from the community there.

Also, if you found a cool application that you think the community should know about you can always contact me via the forums. I look forward to hearing about new and exciting apps that make our Shadows better.

See you soon!

Now an Even Easier Way to Toggle Your View

Posted by Mike Benton on January 11th, 2008

Jeremy Zimmerman wrote in to tell us about an app he found that makes the switch between list view and grid view at the push of a button. It’s called ToggleView and you can get it here. All you have to do is download to your Shadow, install, and access it from your Start > Accessories menu. Enjoy!
