Yet Another Shadow Look Alike

Posted by Mike Benton on December 14th, 2007

It seems that the Shadow’s style is becoming quite popular. This time a Chinese Company, Santek, has cloned it with some minor changes to the DNA. This time it is an actual Windows Mobile phone. A shadow of the Shadow. Has anyone else seen any other Shadow wannabes?

Use Your Favorite Headphones with the Shadow

Posted by Brandon Miniman on December 14th, 2007

If you’re like us, you dislike proprietary jacks that require you to use different cables or different equipment with your device. Case and point: the Shadow has no Standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Luckily you can buy a miniUSB to 3.5mm converter plug which will let you use your favorite headphones. The part is just $10 and you can snag one from the pocketnow.com accessory store.

Did You Lose Your Manual?

Or maybe you just are away from home and need to look up something real quick. AllShadow.com is providing the T-Mobile Shadow User Manual as a download. Great reading by the way.

Does an 8GB microSDHC Card Work on the Shadow?

Posted by Brandon Miniman on December 13th, 2007

The Shadow takes microSD cards, which is fine for sizes up to 4GB, but once you get above that, the format changes to microSDHC (which stands for Secure Digital High Capacity). The difference is that in order to achieve higher capacities, microSDHC has a slightly different memory addressing method than microSD and a theoretical maximum size of around 1TB. That’s a lot of storage. To learn more about SD memory card formats, check out the article at Wikipedia.

You may be wondering if you the Shadow is compatible with this different type of memory, and as reported by forum user Picasosz, they are. He is using an 8GB microSDHC card to store a handful of music and several movies on his Shadow. Right now, you can buy an 8GB SDHC card for about $119 over at the AllShadow.com Store.

An RSS Reader Recommendation for the Shadow

Posted by Brandon Miniman on December 11th, 2007

If you’re like me and read a lot of internet news everyday, it can get cumbersome to keep up with it all. Thanks to RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, it’s easy to check multiple news sources quickly to find the stories that I care about. Have you subscribed to our RSS feed yet? I know many of you have.

You can also get RSS right on your phone. My favorite news reader for the Shadow is NewsBreak by Ilium Software. Not only can you read any RSS feed, but you can also listen to and download podcasts. Another cool feature is that it will alert you when a certain word is found (such as “Shadow” or “Windows Mobile”). The program will work over your EDGE or WiFi connection.

A trial is available for download, and the program costs as reasonable $19.95 should you decide you like it enough to buy.

Shadow Size Comparisons

Posted by Brandon Miniman on December 9th, 2007

If you’re on the T-Mobile network and are looking for a new phone, you’re probably also at looking at other smartphone devices in addition to the Shadow. The below graphic should be of some help in giving you an idea of how the Shadow compares in size to some other T-Mobile devices on the market now.

Seen above front left to right is the T-Mobile Dash (yellow), the Wing (green), Shadow (red), and BlackBerry Pearl 8100 (purple). If you’re looking for the thinnest device, the Dash is the clear winner. That said, the Shadow has very similar dimensions to the Pearl, a device that many consider to be easily pocketable.

Another Browser? Don’t Bother

Posted by Mike Benton on December 6th, 2007

Chuong Nguyen over at pocketnow.com has a summary on the NetFront Browser 3.4 technical preview. From the specs and screenshots I have seen it looks to be a promising alternative to the native Pocket Internet Explorer. I headed over to NetFront’s site and downloaded the preview. My intention was to give you a good look at what it is all about. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work correctly on the Shadow. The rendering is wrong and it doesn’t even show the webpage. Which is unfortunate. Let’s hope these snags get worked out and we can have another browser to choose from. We all like choices, right?

How to Install the Alternative Browser Opera Mini 4

Posted by Mike Benton on December 5th, 2007

Awhile back Danny asked about Opera Mini 4. In this video we go over a quick install of the alternative browser Opera Mini 4 and a few features. If you just want to jump right into it, you can get Opera Mini 4 here, download the High Memory Version.

Note: Opera Mini 4 should work right out of the box with default T-Mobile settings. If it doesn’t you might want to review them with customer service.

How the Shadow Saved AllShadow.com

Posted by Mike Benton on December 4th, 2007

If you go to Start > Accessories you will see an application called Internet Sharing. Up until today I hadn’t paid much attention to it as it seems that everywhere I go today there is an internet connection in one form or another. Well Murphy’s Law went into effect today. I am actually away from the office today at a location where there isn’t a shred of an internet connection when I get a text from Brandon saying the site is down.

“Oh No!” I said, “How will the Shadow fans unite? I must do something!”

I fired up my laptop only to discover no wifi anywhere. What was I to do? A Shadowy image floated in my mind, it said “…internet sharing…oooooo…”

Of course! I hadn’t used Internet Sharing yet and I hoped for a simple setup. I pulled out my USB cable and connected the Shadow to the laptop. Activesync connected, and I activated Internet Sharing. After a minute Windows XP fully recognized everything. I opened Internet Explorer and voila! The connection worked!

It was 100% plug and play. The only thing I had to do was enable it from the Shadow. I was able to download some files and compare changes to troubleshoot the problem. 5 minutes after I knew the site was down, it was back up. The mobile internet isn’t the fastest available but it’s enough to get the task done. Thank you Shadow!

We’d love to know if anyone else has attempted to use the Internet Sharing, and if so what is your experience?
